Bway Corp. to close

Employees of the Bway Corp. of Atlanta’s paint and can plant in Hubbard, previously owned by Ball Corp., said the facility is slated to close by the end of the year.

Officials of the United Steelworkers Union local, which represents about 56 of the plant’s 70 employees, said they learned of Bway’s shutdown plans as they started negotiations on a new labor agreement, reported 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

A union spokesman said Bway bought only the plant’s assets and not the union contract. The union hopes to find a way to keep the plant operating. The plant produces household products and specialty metal containers.

Ball acquired the Hubbard plant in 2006 as part of the company’s acquisition of U.S. Can Corp. Bway purchased the plant in March, the television station reported.
