Mill Creek chapter to meet in June

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its June 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes baked ham, kielbasa with sauerkraut, pierogies, peas and carrots, salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, and jello. Strawberry mousse will be served for dessert. The cost is $18. Reservations are due by May 31 to either Darlene Demjem at 330-755-9089 or Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2527. The speaker for the June 13 meeting will Paul Miletta from Torrie’s Academy of Dance. He developed and teaches a class of dancers with physical and/or mental disabilities. The public is welcome.

Local church offers chicken dinners

Drive through chicken dinners will be offered at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on May 25 from 3-6 p.m. They will consist of chicken parmesan, spaghetti, three bean salad, roll and butter, and cake. The cost is $9 per dinner (cash only), and the proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Each customer will get $1 off the purchase price if they bring a can of vegetables that will be donated to the needy via the Rescue Mission or some other worthwhile organization. Green Team presents “One Child, One Planet”

Join Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team at the Canfield library on June 27 at 2 p.m. as they present “One Child, One Planet” by Bridget McGovern Llewellyn and Carl R. Sams II during the Summer Reading program. Each page of this book offers suggestions for young and old alike on ways we can appreciate and take care of our precious planet. After reading the story, program participants will create a craft with recovered material and will receive an activity book and information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades Pre-K through 5.

Local animal rescues to have basket raffle

Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled are hosting a Basket Raffle May 20 at The Federal, 110 W Federal St. in Youngstown. The event will be from 12–5:30 p.m. with baskets drawn promptly at 5:30 p.m. One hundred baskets and/or gift cards will be raffled off and the winner need not be present at the drawing. Come out, have lunch or dinner and work together to help the forgotten dogs of the Valley. Fifteen percent of all food sales will be donated back. Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World!” and runs through July 31. All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 21 will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Star gazing party to be June 3

The fifth annual Bill Pearce Memorial Star Party, sponsored by The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society, will take place on June 3 from 9-11 p.m. at Austintown Park’s Pogany Pavilion, weather permitting. The event is free and open to the public. If needed, there will be a rain date on June 16 from 9-11 p.m. As you enter the park, turn left on to the first road that will lead to Pogany Pavilion or you will be diverted in the wrong direction. Participants will be viewing the planets and deep space objects through telescopes and binoculars. It is suggested that you bring bug spray and bottled water. New business lectures series

SCORE Youngstown recently announced a new business lecture series called “From Bagels to Business.” Entrepreneurs will enjoy Kravitz bagels and coffee, while learning about current information designed to support small business success. Mark Cole of Mark Cole Insurance Agency, will launch this series with “Effective Networking for Leaders” on May 22 from 9-10:30 p.m. at Kravitz Deli, located at 3135 Belmont Ave. in Liberty. Cole serves as a Score mentor, current Chair of the Regional Chamber’s Ambassador to the Community Committee, is active in many local organizations and brings more than 30 years of experience to his presentation. Author of “The Only Book on Business You’ll Ever Need,” he enjoys sharing his small business tips and strategies with others. YAPA to have May event

The Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association (YAPA) will host a senior soire event at Selah Restaurant, located at 130 S. Bridge Street in Struthers, on May 25 at 7 p.m. for sorority alumnae that are interested in continuing their sisterhood. Light refreshments will be provided. YAPA allows for friendships with your sorority alumnae and Panhellenic sisters, leadership development, fun events such as sisterhoods and socials, and enriching activities throughout the year. YAPA has been building the bonds of Panhellenic sisterhood for ninety-one years. The group has raised funds for collegiate Greek women, local nonprofit organizations and currently is committed to raise funds toward its endowment for its scholarship. YAPA has received a Citation of Merit for programming for the third straight year from the National Panhellenic Conference and a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Programming in 2015 for collegiate alumnae Panhellenic relations, activities and events. Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association provides lifelong involvement for Greek alumnae women and supports collegiate Greek women. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be meetings at Shenango Presbyterian Church, 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave. in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale

There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Local libraries to have May closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 28 and 29 (Memorial Day).

Crayon art

Do you want to learn how to create your own masterpiece using crayons? Join the Canfield library on May 25 at 6:30 p.m., where you will get to create your own crayon art that you will get to take home that day. Coupon Swap

If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in during library hours at the Canfield library during the month of May to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.

Celebrity book club

Catch up on all the juicy celebrity gossip at the Canfield library on May 22 at 11 a.m. The group will discuss books by or about famous people. Or even books that made people famous. The selection this month is “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen. This event is for adults.

Chair yoga class

Applications for Italian festival scholarship available

This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University and be of Italian descent in order to be eligible. The deadline for applicants is June 15, 2017.

Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. STEAM Saturday: optical illusion art

Try your hand at tricking the eye on May 20 at 11 a.m. at the Canfield library. Create a colorful piece of optical illusion art that will make you look twice. All materials are provided. This event is for children in fourth- through sixth-graders.

Bonding with babies and books

This program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Thursday in May at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in May at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in May at 10 and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
