Mill Creek chapter to meet in June
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its June 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes baked ham, kielbasa with sauerkraut, pierogies, peas and carrots, salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, and jello. Strawberry mousse will be served for dessert. The cost is $18. Reservations are due by May 31 to either Darlene Demjem at 330-755-9089 or Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2527. The speaker for the June 13 meeting will Paul Miletta from Torrie’s Academy of Dance. He developed and teaches a class of dancers with physical and/or mental disabilities. The public is welcome.
Local church to host Trash and Treasure sale
Grace Lutheran Church will host its Trash and Treasure sale on May 20 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the church, located at 162 S. Raccoon Road. There will be a variety of things for sale, such as household goods, tools, books, clothes, collectables and other items. Lunch, baked goods and refreshments will be available. Proceeds of the sale are used by the men’s group to fund improvement of maintenance projects around the church. Entrance of the sale area is in the rear of the church.
Square dance to be June 3
On June 3, the North Bloomfield Historical Society will host a square dance at the Town Hall, located at State Route 45 and State Route 87 from 7-9:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $5 per person. No dancing experience is necessary. For more information, call 330-506-3370.
Meet best-selling author Sara Shepard

Green Team presents “One Child, One Planet”
Join Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team at the Austitnown library on June 28 at 10 a.m. as they present “One Child, One Planet” by Bridget McGovern Llewellyn and Carl R. Sams II during the Summer Reading program. Each page of this book offers suggestions for young and old alike on ways we can appreciate and take care of our precious planet. After reading the story, program participants will create a craft with recovered material and will receive an activity book and information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades Pre-K through 5.

Local animal rescues to have basket raffle
Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled are hosting a Basket Raffle on May 20 at The Federal, located at 110 W Federal St. in Youngstown. The event will be from 12–5:30 p.m. with baskets being drawn promptly at 5:30 p.m. One hundred baskets and/or gift cards will be raffled off and the winner need not be present at the drawing. Come out, have lunch or dinner and work together to help the forgotten dogs of the Valley. Fifteen percent of all food sales will be donated back. Our Zoo to You program
Come to the Austintown library on June 21 at 2 p.m. and make some animal friends from the Our Zoo to You program. Children will be able to see and touch a variety of exotic animals during our visit with the Our Zoo to You traveling petting zoo. This event is for children of all ages.
New business lectures series kicks off on May 22
SCORE Youngstown recently announced a new business lecture series called “From Bagels to Business.” Entrepreneurs will enjoy Kravitz bagels and coffee, while learning about current information designed to support small business success. Mark Cole of Mark Cole Insurance Agency, will launch this series with “Effective Networking for Leaders” on May 22 from 9-10:30 p.m. at Kravitz Deli, located at 3135 Belmont Ave. in Liberty. Cole serves as a Score mentor, current Chair of the Regional Chamber’s Ambassador to the Community Committee, is active in many local organizations and brings more than 30 years of experience to his presentation. Author of “The Only Book on Business You’ll Ever Need,” he enjoys sharing his small business tips and strategies with others. Austintown Park to have summer concerts
The 2017 Summer Concerts in the Park series, presented by Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course, at Austintown Park will soon begin. Concerts will take place on Tuesday evenings, from 7-8:30 p.m., weather permitting. Trash and Treasure sale to be May 20

YAPA to have May event
The Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association (YAPA) will host a senior soire event at Selah Restaurant, located at 130 S. Bridge Street in Struthers, on May 25 at 7 p.m. for sorority alumnae that are interested in continuing their sisterhood. Light refreshments will be provided. YAPA allows for friendships with your sorority alumnae and Panhellenic sisters, leadership development, fun events such as sisterhoods and socials, and enriching activities throughout the year. YAPA has been building the bonds of Panhellenic sisterhood for ninety-one years. The group has raised funds for collegiate Greek women, local nonprofit organizations and currently is committed to raise funds toward its endowment for its scholarship. YAPA has received a Citation of Merit for programming for the third straight year from the National Panhellenic Conference and a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Programming in 2015 for collegiate alumnae Panhellenic relations, activities and events. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Star gazing party to be June 3
The fifth annual Bill Pearce Memorial Star Party, sponsored by The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society, will take place on June 3 from 9-11 p.m. at Austintown Park’s Pogany Pavilion, weather permitting. The event is free and open to the public. If needed, there will be a rain date on June 16 from 9-11 p.m. As you enter the park, turn left on to the first road that will lead to Pogany Pavilion or you will be diverted in the wrong direction. Participants will be viewing the planets and deep space objects through telescopes and binoculars. It is suggested that you bring bug spray and bottled water. Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale
There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Battle of the books
Sixteen YA books will face off in head-to-head competition at the Austintown library during regular hours in May, but only one can win the Battle of the Books. Fill out and submit your book bracket to be eligible for a random prize drawing. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. There’s always something new to discover at the library. Look for the Austintown library’s interactive STEM stations on display during the month of May. With two new stations to explore each week, you’ll want to come back again and again. This event is for school-age children.
Bonding with babies and books
This program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6- to 23-months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in May at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library.
Gotta move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in May at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
IHM Run Festival to be June 8
This is the annual 5K run that gets the local community festival off to a great running start. The date is set for June 8. The start time is 7 p.m. Runners, be sure to mark your calendar now so you don’t miss out on one of the longest standing 5K runs in the area. For a $10 entry fee, runners can run through local neighborhood roads and finish near the festival grounds. All runners must be registered to participate. Online registration is available at runsignup.com/race/oh/austintown/ihmfestival5k. Race day registration will start at 5 p.m. in front of the education building at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown.
