Twenty East High School students were rewarded with Amazon Kindle Fire tablets for excellence in academics and behavior.

Local members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. – in conjunction with HLW Fast Track – provided and presented the tablets to the students.

Principal Denise Vaclav-Danko said she selected five students from each grade to receive the electronic devices.

The tablets were awarded this week based on improvements in students’ behavior, grades and general academic engagement throughout the year.

David Davis, the president of the local Psi Omicron chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and an East High alumnus, handed out the tablets and posed for photos with the students.

“It’s great to come back and give back to the school that produced me,” Davis said. “There’s a lot of positive things happening in this school, and we wanted to recognize the students that are part of those achievements.”

London Black, 15, is a freshman at East and received a tablet for maintaining a 3.5 GPA throughout the semester.

“It feels good to be recognized. ... I get recognized a lot here. East puts up your picture if you do good,” London said.

This is the first year for the partnership between East High and the fraternity.

Roshay Huff, deputy director of transformation for East and Chaney, helped facilitate the partnership as her husband, Jonathan Huff, is the fraternity’s chairman of community outreach.

Vaclav-Danko said the partnership was great development for the students and the school.

“We’re very grateful for the partnership and generosity of Omega Psi Phi and for the brothers’ ongoing interest and investment in our students,” Vaclav-Danko said.
