Champion 9, LaBrae 4

Andrew Russell struck out seven batters and walked just one for Champion, who trailed 4-3 before a five run outburst in the third inning. Russell also had two hits at the plate. Malakai Roberts, Lucas Nasonti, AJ Meyer, and Justin Taninecz had two RBIs apiece for the Flashes. Champion will take on Hawken in the district championship game today at 4:30 p.m. at LaBrae High School.

Hawken 6, Grand Valley 5

The Mustangs tried to rally in the seventh inning, but the Hawks got the final out with two runners in scoring position. Hawken and Champion will meet in the district final at 4:30 pm. today at LaBrae.

REGULAR SEASON

Mathews 10, Badger 6, 8 innings

Mathews (14-5) scored four runs in the eighth inning to secure a win. Dan Canter and Hunter Schoenfeld had two hits each and Schoenfeld added two RBIs. Curt Howser had three hits for Badger including two doubles.

SOFTBALL

DIVISION I

Boardman 13, Aurora 5

Lauren Gabriele homered, doubled, singled twice and drove in four runs as the Spartans advanced to a district final against All-American Conference rival Canfield today at Solon’s Roxbury Field. Alicia Saxton and Lauren Pavlansky each singled three times and drove in two runs for Boardman. Paige Dill and Sarah Murray each had two hits and Logan Menosky had two RBIs for the Spartans. Ashley Cornelius scattered four hits and allowed only one earned run for the win.

Canfield 8, Solon 5

Jenna Gibson ripped three doubles in as many at-bats and drove in six runs to lead Canfield into a district final. The Cardinals spotted the Comets four runs in the top of the first inning, but Bridget Durkin held them to only one run over the final six innings and Canfield’s bats eventually came alive. Solon led 5-1 entering the bottom of the third, but Canfield scored four runs in that inning, another in the fourth and two in the sixth. Maura Kennedy, Chloe Cruz, and Savannah Maass each singled for the Cardinals. Durkin scattered eight hits and two walks. She struck out three.

DIVISION IV

East Canton 15, Western Reserve 14, 8 innings

Western Reserve and East Canton combined to hit four home runs in the deciding two innings. The game was a continuation of Monday’s contest after the game was suspended due to darkness. Picking up in the fifth with the score tied at 9, East Canton picked up three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Western Reserve responded with fireworks in the seventh with Layla Woolf’s grand slam and Morgan Donithan’s solo shot to pull ahead 14-12. East Canton’s Kayla Eichelberger and Lexi Best hit back-to-back solo home runs to tie the game. An error at third base sent the Hornet’s Cassandra Wolfe home to win the game.

REGULAR SEASON

West Branch 10, Marlington 0

Bailey Byers clubbed two more home runs — her 19th and 20th of the season — as the Warriors rolled the Dukes. Byers went 3 for 3 with four RBIs. West Branch will meet Lakeview in a Division II district semifinal today at Alliance. Hubbard and Marlington will meet in the other semifinal.

Champion 4, Crestwood 3

McKenzie Zigmont got the win for Champion (25-2), striking out five. The win gives Zigmont 14 on the season as a starting pitcher. Offensively the FLashes were paced by Zigmont, who had two hits including a homerun, and Molly Williams who lso homered and had two RBIs.
