AUSTINTOWN

The Austintown school board Tuesday hired Alexis Weber as the district’s new food-service director.

She replaces Tascin Brooks, who is leaving the district in July to become food-service coordinator for Youngstown City Schools.

Weber is a registered dietitian nutritionist as well as a licensed dietitian. She received her bachelor’s degree in applied science in food and nutrition from Youngstown State University. She previously worked as regulatory compliance analyst for the J.M. Smucker Co. and is also the owner of her own business, The Cake Baker, making specialty baked goods out of her home.

Weber is an Austintown Fitch graduate and lives in Austintown with her husband, Jordan, and two children, Emmy and Patrick.

Accused of stealing TVs

GIRARD

Two men were arraigned Tuesday in Girard Municipal Court, accused of stealing TVs from the Walmart on Goldie Road in Liberty.

Craig Honkonen, 35, of Niles, and Aaron Jones, 47, of Youngstown, face charges of robbery, complicity to robbery, possession of criminal tools and criminal damaging.

Police say Honkonen and Jones stole more than $2,000 worth of TV equipment from Walmart about 2:30 a.m. Saturday. They used pliers to remove security devices from the items, police reported. An employee tried to stop them and a struggle erupted over a shopping cart, according to a police report.

A judge set bonds of $10,000 for each man. They will next appear in court today.

Car crashes into house

GIRARD

Police cited a woman for failure to control after she crashed her car into a house Monday night.

A 25-year-old Girard woman drove into a house on the 200 block of South Davis Street just after 11:15 p.m. According to a traffic report, she lost control of her vehicle, struck a curb and then went through a front yard before colliding with the house. Family members told police the driver may have been suffering a medical episode.

There was a 6-year-old girl in the car. First-responders transported the driver and the child to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for evaluation. The crash caused extensive damage to the house.

Sentenced in drug case

YOUNGSTOWN

A 36-year-old Boardman man, who pleaded guilty as charged to heroin trafficking, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Raymond Floyd Jr. of Shields Road drew the sentence Tuesday from Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Floyd, who apologized for his crime, was secretly indicted in January on a charge of trafficking in five to 10 grams of heroin April 12, 2016. There are 28 grams in an ounce.

“I let my addiction get the best of me,” Floyd told the judge.

Police awards ceremony

YOUNGSTOWN

The city police department’s annual awards ceremony honoring officers’ exceptional performances is scheduled for Thursday. The event will take place at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church hall, Via Mount Carmel.

Officers will receive commendations for their work over the last year. The department’s top awards are Excellent Police Duty and the Lifesaving Award.

Bike Helmet Safety

NEW MIDDLETOWN

New Middletown police are giving away 70 free bicycle helmets in honor of Bike Helmet Safety Awareness Month. The helmets are available between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the municipal building, 10711 Main St.

The American Academy of Pediatrics awarded the helmets to the police department. Additionally, through the summer, police will award free Subway meal certificates to children wearing helmets.

United Way meeting

United Way of Trumbull County will have its 94th annual meeting at noon Thursday at Leo’s Ristorante, 7042 E. Market St. The annual event will highlight the year in review, recognize outgoing board members and elect members to the board.

United Way will also recognize companies and community leaders who provided support during the 2016 fundraising-campaign year.

Two Ohio lawmakers announced bids Tuesday to become the state’s chief elections official.

State Rep. Kathleen Clyde, D-Kent, launched her campaign for secretary of state, the first Democratic candidate to announce in a down-ticket race in next year’s elections.

State Sen. Frank LaRose, R-Hudson, announced his candidacy for the post at a evening conference call with GOP officials. He joins state Rep. Dorothy Pelanda, R-Marysville, who earlier announced her campaign for secretary of state.
