Division I

Five Canfield players will be competing in Thursday’s District Tournament at Springside Racquet & Fitness Club in Akron. In singles, Tim Cianciola will open against St. Ignatius’ Andy Siciliano. In doubles play, Dylan Todd-Rajan Taneja will play St. Ignatius’ Richie Hofstra-Brian Zhu. In the other half of the bracket, Bobby Long-Sirin Nalluri-Ganf will play Kenston’s Parker Banning-Sam Cohen. Two rounds will be played on Thursday and the championships on Saturday.

Division II

Four Mahoning Valley singles players and four doubles teams will be trying to earn state trips when district competition begins on Friday at Springside Racquet & Fitness Club in Akron. In singles play, Lakeview’s Jack McDivitt will play St. Thomas Aquinas’ Christian Harwood. Cardinal Mooney’s Andrew Engartner will play Hawken’s Ryan Leizman. Warren JFK’s Armand Nannicola will play St. John’s Tony Massucci. Ursuline’s Greg Morgione will open against Akron SVSM’s Michael Chmura. In doubles play, Lakeview’s John Silbaugh-Anthony Innocenzi will play Orrville’s Jeff Dilyard-David Dilyard. Poland’s Sam Delatore-Sam Scotford will open against Orange’s Santiago Bustamante-Rahul Krishnan. Ursuline’s Austin Arfaras-Luke Tsudis will play Geneva’s Nathan Palinkas-Isaac Palinkas. Warren JFK’s Justin Bofenkamp-James Martuccio will play Chippewa’s B.J. Galehouse-Connor Hutzell. Two rounds will be played on Friday and the championships on Saturday.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Austintown Middle School boys track team won the inaugural OHSAA Junior High Track and Field State Championships on Saturday. Nathan Leskovac won the high jump (5-feet-11). Tyrese Bandy was second in the 200 (23.1) and third in the 400 (51.78). Jacob Smail was eighth in discus (134-9). The 4x100 relay team (Isiah Lewis, Bryant Douglas, Alex Sorrells, Anthony Caulton) was third (47.17). The 4x200 team (Lewis, Miguel Burgos, Sorrells, Caulton) was second (1:37.47). The 4x400 team (Adam Emerick, Corbin Roby, Tod Simons, Bandy) was third (3:45.69).

WRESTLING

Several Mahoning Valley wrestlers fared well at this weekend’s Ohio Freestyle and Greco Roman State Wrestling Championships at Otterbein College. These Cadet wrestlers represented the Green Machine Wrestling Club of Austintown: Gus Sutton, Fitch, 126 pounds, first; Alex DelGarbino, Girard, 120, second; Anthony Czap, South Range, 195, second; and Logan Maszaros, Girard, 160, sixth. These Junior wrestlers also represented Green Machine: Jack DelGarbino, Girard, 285, second; Kelly Williams, Boardman, 152, third; Michael Ferree, Fitch, 160, third; and Breylon Douglas, Fitch, 195, fourth. In freestyle, these Green Machine wrestlers placed: Sam Tillet, Kent, 88, first; Sutton, Fitch, 126, first; Michael O’Horo, Boardman, 182, first; and Joey Perez, Fitch, 220, sixth. In juniors, Jack DelGarbino, Girard, 285, third; and Ferree, Fitch, 160, third.
