Doctorates
Educational administration
Kelly S. Darney of Columbiana has earned her doctorate degree in educational administration from Youngstown State University.
Darney is employed at Columbiana County Career & Technical Center in Lisbon. She has been employed there since 1995, the last 10 years as adult education director.
She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Kent State University. A graduate of Crestview High School, Darney is the daughter of Bob and Sue Darney of Leetonia.
Darney is president of Rotary Club of Salem and a trustee for the Workforce Development Board Inc. of Mahoning and Columbiana Counties.
Musicology
Sara Elizabeth Gulgas of Boardman has earned a doctorate deree in Musicology from the University of Pittsburgh’s Dietrich School of Arts and Science.
Gulgas is a 2007 graduate of Canfield High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music in 2011 and a master’s degree from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, in 2012.
Horticulture and crop science
Dominic Petrella of Girard graduated from Ohio State University, where he earned his doctorate degree in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science.
Petrella graduated from Girard High School in 2004, earned a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University, and a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from OSU. Petrella recently accepted a postdoctoral research position at the University of Minnesota.
HONORS
History contest wnner
Sophia Alleman, a Youngstown resident and sixth-grade student at St. Rose School, Girard, competed at the Regional History Day Contest on April 1 at Youngstown State University and won first place. She traveled to Ohio Wesleyan University on April 29 to compete at the state competition, Ohio History Day, and also won first place.
