“Alien: Covenant” will be released in theaters this week, the latest in the sci-fi

“Alien: Covenant” will be released in theaters this week, the latest in the sci-fi horror movie franchise. Here are five facts about the film:

v Second in trilogy: In 2015, director Ridley Scott announced that “Covenant” will be the second (following 2012’s “Prometheus”) in a new Alien trilogy that leads up to the original film.

v History: Scott avoided watching “Alien 3” (1992) after it was released, and strongly disliked it when he finally saw it decades later. Subsequently, he came up with the idea of making a “sequel-substitution,” which then became the current film, after many rewrites.

v Setting: The new planet, which is assumed to be the home of the engineers, is being referred to as a paradise and could be the home of the gods who created humanity.

v Name change: The original title for the movie was “Alien: Paradise Lost.”

v IMAX: “Covenant” is one of three feature films this year that will get an IMAX 70mm release. The other two are “Dunkirk” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

“Miss USA” (7 p.m., Fox): Break out the swimsuits and sashes, it’s time for the “Miss USA” competition. Julianne Hough and Ashley Graham are our hosts for the festivities as Deshauna Barber prepares to crown her successor.

“King Charles III” (9 p.m., PBS): In the speculative drama “King Charles III,” the late Tim Pigott-Smith imagines what life will be like for Britain’s Prince Charles after his accession to the throne, sometime in the years ahead. It’s an adaptation from a Tony-nominated Broadway play that predicts plenty of turmoil for the monarchy.
