YSU men’s golf wins academic honor

The Youngstown State men’s golf team received an NCAA Public Recognition Award which honors teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Penguins received the honor for the 2015-16 academic year. YSU had a perfect APR of 1,000 for the year as well as a perfect 1,000 for a multiyear APR total.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).

This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.

OHSAA levies penalties against Walnut Hills

columbus

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced penalties for Cincinnati Walnut Hills stemming from its investigation into recruiting activities and coaching permits.

During its investigation, the OHSAA submitted evidence of prohibited recruiting activities to school administrators involving football head coach Brian Lainhart. Shortly thereafter, the school announced that Lainhart will not be renewed, therefore the sanctions are less severe than if the school was retaining the coach.

Sanctions for Walnut Hills include probation through June 2019, a $1,500 fine, public reprimand and an audit of all permits for Walnut Hills coaches. If it is discovered that a Walnut Hills coach does not have the required permit after August 1, the coach will be suspended, the school will be fined and the case submitted to the Ohio Auditor of State.

Russians say Ovechkin was not 100 percent

Russian hockey officials announced Thursday that Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin played through injury before Washington was eliminated from the NHL playoffs in the second round by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ovechkin finished the playoffs dealing with a lower-body injury that required pain-numbing injections, the Russian Hockey Federation said in noting that Ovechkin would not be able to play for Russia at the world championships in Europe because of it. A person with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed the injury and treatment to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t announced it.

Ovechkin never let on that he was playing hurt. He had five goals and three assists in 13 playoff games as the Capitals flamed out again, eliminated in seven games by the defending Stanley Cup-champion Penguins . Coach Barry Trotz is expected to address all team injuries at his post-season news conference Friday.

It was not immediately clear when Ovechkin was injured or how severely.
