Football athletes can sign LOI in December

High school seniors can now sign football letters of intent in December in addition to the traditional signing period in February.

The Collegiate Commissioners Association on Monday announced its approval of the new signing period, which is part of a package of reforms passed by the NCAA in April.

The early signing period is scheduled for Dec. 20-27,, coinciding with the first three days of the initial date of the football midyear junior college transfer NLI signing period.

The early letter-of-intent signing period is part of a package of reforms that also permits high school juniors to take official visits from April through June, and that impose a two-year waiting period before Bowl Subdivision schools can hire people close to recruits to non-coaching positions.

Lowry to opt out of pact with Raptors

toronto

Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry will opt out of the final year of his contract and test free agency this summer.

The three-time All-Star has one year and $12 million remaining on the four-year, $48 million deal he signed in July 2014.

Lowry averaged career bests of 22.4 points, 7.0 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game this season but was limited to 60 games because of a right wrist injury that required surgery in February.

Sidelined by a sprained left ankle, Lowry was not active Sunday when Toronto was swept in the second round of the playoffs by defending champion Cleveland. Lowry was injured in the third quarter of Game 2. He aggravated the injury while trying to warm up for Friday’s Game 3.

N. American attempts to speed World Cup bid

manama, bahrain

North America will move closer to securing the 2026 World Cup when the FIFA Council is expected to approve plans for an accelerated bidding process on Tuesday.

World soccer’s 211-strong membership will then be asked on Thursday to rubber-stamp a proposal to confirm the United States, Canada, and Mexico as co-hosts by June 2018, if they meet the FIFA requirements.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino told The Associated press on Monday it’s an “interesting, original proposal and we will discuss it tomorrow at the council and present the recommendation to the congress.”

By avoiding a contest, the bidding process should be resistant to the allegations of wrongdoing that have tainted recent votes.
