Awards for educators

John Tullio, director of curriculum and instruction for the Canfield School District, will receive the Lifetime Educational Service Award from Youngstown State University’s Beeghly College of Education.

The award will be presented during the Alumni Awards Dinner on Thursday at YSU in McKay Auditorium. Tullio is in his 10th year at Canfield and previously spent 35 years in the Youngstown City School District.

Also, at that same dinner, Vincent Colaluca will be awarded with the Dean’s Appreciation Award.

The award is given annually to an educator in our region who has made noteworthy contributions in the education profession, in the Beeghly College of Education, and in the community.

Colaluca was nominated for his innovative student-centered leadership in the Austintown School District.

Faculty excellence

David Hacker, associate professor, Department of Geology, Kent State University at Trumbull, has been named one of this year’s President’s Faculty Excellence Award recipients.

This annual award is given to a small number of tenure-stream faculty across the entire Kent State University system for outstanding research, scholarship, and creative activity; remarkable teaching; and/or exemplary service with national or international significance.

Eagle of the Cross

Ursuline High School seniors Frank Sobnosky and Carly Koewacich received the Eagle of the Cross Award from Bishop George V. Murry, Bishop of Youngstown.

The Eagle of the Cross is awarded based upon service to one’s church, school and community, and it is the highest award given to young people in the Diocese of Youngstown.

Sobnosky is a member of St. Rose Church in Girard, and Koewacich is a parishioner at St. Charles Church in Boardman.
