Mother’s Day brunch
There will be a Mother’s Day brunch at Fellows Riverside Gardens on May 14. There will be two seatings, one at noon and another at 3 p.m. The menu will include fresh fruit, tossed salad, sweet rolls and Kravitz bagels, a made-to-order omlette bar, applewood smoked bacon, a carving station with turkey breast and certified Angus prime rib, haddock Francaise, chicken marsala, chicken tenders, stuffed cabbage, steamed green beans, macaroni and cheese, tortellini in vodka sauce and desserts of assorted pies, brownies and cheesecakes. The cost is $28 for adults after tax and gratuity, $14 for children ages 12-5 after tax and gratuity and free for children ages 4 and younger. “Cabaret Under the Stars” with Nancy Wolfgang and Kyle Primous
The Stage Door Academy of the Arts is presenting “Cabaret Under the Stars” featuring Nancy Wolfgang and Kyle Primous on May 6 at 8 p.m. in the Stage Door Theater, located at 721 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman. The event is a fundraiser for the Stage Door Academy for the Arts, a nonprofit youth development organization committed to providing high quality performing arts education and exceptional community entertainment. Tickets are $25 and include dancing after the show and hors d’oeuvres. Seating will be at cocktail tables for four. A private table for two may be reserved for $100. Knitting guild to meet
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet May 9 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. Jen Kendall will present a program on Knitted Edgings. There will be a collection of much needed household items to be donated to Beatitude House, along with handmade blankets from the Warm Up America program. Local preschool to host open house
St. Marks Building Blocks Learning Center, located at 280 Millcreek Drive in Boardman, will be having its spring open house on May 11 from 3-6 p.m. They offer preschool and childcare for children who are 6-weeks up to 10-years-old. Stop by to meet the teachers and see the school. Half off the registration fee will be offered during the event. If you would like a personal introduction to resources available at the library or need more time with a librarian than you can get over the phone or if you just walk in, make an appointment to book a library during the month of May. Book-a-Librarian sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. Local libraries to have May closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 14, 28 and 29 (Memorial Day).
Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale
There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Share your fan art at the library
Are you part of a fandom and want to share your enthusiasm with others? Make wall art by using old book pages as the background and come to the Boardman library on May 17 at 7 p.m. with a design that represents what you fangirl or fanboy about. Registration is required. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Check into Chess
Join the Boardman library to play chess on May 7 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. This is a family program for all ages. If you would like to learn to play, they will be happy to teach you.
It’s all about yarn
Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another on May 19 at 11 a.m. at the Boardman library. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for adults.
Preserving your family heirlooms
This is your introduction to Preservation and Conservation issues relevant to the genealogist. Whether the information is in the form of original documents and artifacts, or as generated research findings, this seminar on May 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library will cover basic care, storage and handling techniques; repairing and reformatting; technology migration; disaster response and legacy planning. Gardening tips shared at library event
Come to the Boardman library on May 20 at 10 a.m. for quick and easy solutions to problems gardeners face every day. There will be 60-65 “tips” to create and maintain your garden. This event is for adults.
I Read YA! book club to meet
The I Read YA! Book Club will meet on May 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. This event is for adult fans of Young Adult Literature from ages 18 and up. Talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss YA literature. This month we will be discussing “Salt to the Sea” by Ruta Sepetys.
Reader’s Choice Book Club to have May 8 meeting
The group will discuss “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith on May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published. They will preview June’s book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. This event is for adults.
Local Friends to meet in May
There will be a Friends of the Boardman Library program and meeting on May 8 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. The program will be “The ESPN Effect” presented by Dr. Adam Earnheardt, YSU Department of Art and Communication. Meeting to follow the presentation. This event is for adults.
Puzzle swap
Swap six of your once-done jigsaw puzzles with others on May 10 at 4 p.m. at the Boardman library. This event takes place every second Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. This event is for adults.
Star gazing party to be June 3
The fifth annual Bill Pearce Memorial Star Party, sponsored by The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society, will take place on June 3 from 9-11 p.m. at Austintown Park’s Pogany Pavilion, weather permitting. The event is free and open to the public. If needed, there will be a rain date on June 16 from 9-11 p.m. As you enter the park, turn left on to the first road that will lead to Pogany Pavilion or you will be diverted in the wrong direction. Participants will be viewing the planets and deep space objects through telescopes and binoculars. It is suggested that you bring bug spray and bottled water. Summer Discovery to be May 1 until July 31
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Teens and adults can read books to earn prizes (while supplies last), too, and earn a chance to win a gift card. Applications for Italian festival scholarship available
This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University and be of Italian descent in order to be eligible. The deadline for applicants is June 15, 2017.
Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Mill Creek Chapter to meet on May 9
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its May 9 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and there will be no speaker, only a business meeting will follow. The menu is creamed chicken over biscuit, roast pork, mashed potatoes, California blend of vegetables, tossed salad, applesauce, Jello and apple cake for dessert. Lego my library
Meet at the Boardman library on May 13 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Night owl story time
There will be an evening story time for children, ages 3-5, on May 16, 23 and 30 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity.
Make it for Mom
There will be Mother’s Day stories and a craft at the Boardman library on May 9 at 7 p.m. Preschoolers must attend with a parent to this one hour program. This event is for children of all ages.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Boardman library on May 17, 24 and 31 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Bonding with babies and books
This program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6- to 23-months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in May at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on May 10 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
