Youth Ministry pancake breakfast

A pancake and sausage breakfast will take place on April 9 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Holy Family Parish Center. “Free Will” donations will be accepted with all proceeds to be donated to the Holy Family Youth Ministry to help finance its missionary trip to the Appalachian area of Kentucky in June. Come enjoy a breakfast and donate to the extremely worthy mission of the youth group. This breakfast is being sponsored by the Holy Family Council of the Knights of Columbus 15573.

BPJWL April meeting to be April 3

The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on April 3 at 7 p.m. at Glenellen, located at 9661 Market St. in North Lima. League members will be preparing for a raffle based on the Ohio Lottery. Tickets are $5 and are available from any league member. Kirsten Weaver will be the guest speaker that evening. Her program will be about her trip to Jamaica with Therapy Missions – USA Mission Team. They are going to a Mustard Seed Community in Jamaica to do Occupational Therapy work with adults with Developmental Disabilities. Hostesses for the month are Joyce Martin, Sperry Rongone and Chery Smaldino.

Knitting Guild meeting to be April 11

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A brief program on Knitting Slang will be presented and members are encouraged to bring and show their knitted Herringbone Stitch pillows. Anyone interested in information about the guild, joining the guild or donating towards the guild’s charity work can contact wrkg.ohio@gmail.com.

ABWA meeting to be April 11

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will meet on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at A La Cart in Canfield. Dinner will be southern baked chicken, roast beef, potato au gratin, peas and carrots, salad, Jello, cole slaw and dessert. The cost is $18. The speaker for the evening will be Chief Don Hutchinson of the Cardinal Fire Department, to speak on the drug problem in Ohio.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Poland library on April 27 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate stories and activities that will help your child learn about money. Each child will receive a piggy bank. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Grease monkeys and gearheads

Do you use repair and shop manuals to fix things yourself? A lot of these are digital now. Come to the Poland library on April 5 at 7 p.m. and learn how to use Mitchell’s Pro Demand and EBSCO’s Small Engine Repair Reference Center databases. Space is limited, so registration is required. This class is for adults.

Shakespeare day

Celebrate the birthday of William Shakespeare while learning about the famous bard at the Poland library on April 26 at 9 a.m. This event includes displays and hands-on activities. It promises to be fun for all ages.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Poland library on April 4 at 6 p.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library on April 5, 12 and 19 at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Poland library on April 6, 13 and 20 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Fun time for 4s and 5s

Join the Poland library on April 11 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and finger plays, and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books and signs, oh my

Come to the Poland library on April 26 at 10 a.m. and learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.

Spring things

Join the Poland library on April 8 at 2 p.m. for spring stories, a craft and more fun. This event is for children of all ages.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International at the Poland library on April 19 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for children in grades 1-4.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on April 18 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This is for children, ages 6 and up.

Listen and Lego

Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at the Poland library on April 6 at 1 p.m. Legos will be provided. This program is for children ages 4-7.

Sweet science

Do candy and science go together? Find out as you put candy to the test at the Poland library on April 13 at 6 p.m. Maybe you’ll even snack on the leftovers. This event is for children in grades K-6.

Marvel movie madness

Help the Poland library celebrate the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” on April 29 at 11 a.m. You’ll watch clips and trailers, have snacks, crafts and trivia. This event is for teens age 13 and up.

Easter egg earrings

Make a pair of adorable Easter egg earrings during the jewelry program at the Poland library on April 10 at 6:30 p.m. You will learn simple jewelry making techniques while creating a project you can take home that night. No supplies are needed. Beginners are welcome. Space is limited, so registration recommended. This event is for tweens, teens and adults.

The future of burial rites

Cemeteries are valuable, seemingly permanent places to uncover genealogical information and local history. But will they always be a part of the landscape in family history research? During the 21st century it is likely that dwindling land space, environmental concerns, the surge in non-burial options and the availability of new technologies all will lead to significant changes in death rituals. You will examine what this means for genealogy at the Poland library on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. Registration for all programs is required. Friends of the Poland library to meet April 4

The Friends of the Poland Library will meet on April 4 at the Poland library. There will be a coffee hour at 9:30 a.m. with the program and business meeting to follow at 10 a.m. The program will be “The History of 19th Century Fashions” and will be given by Traci Manning. The title of her talk will be “Oh That Cannot Be Comfortable.” Hostesses will be Pamela Durkin, Mary Lou Carbon, Beverly Gibson and Carol McCoy. Donations of books, magazines, CDs, DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Poland Friends Book Cart. The meeting is open to the public. New members are welcome. Membership dues are $10 per year.

Trim a tree for April

Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours in April. This craft is for children of all ages.

Montessori pasta dinner

A pasta dinner will take place on April 8 from 4-8 p.m. at the Poland United Methodist Church. The dinner will benefit The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley. Mark your calendar for an evening of family fun and food. The church is located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road. Dinner (eat-in or carry-out) will be $8 for adults and $6 for children. The price includes: pasta, meatballs, salad, bread and dessert. Purchase a pie or cake from the bake sale, shop for fun and interesting items at the World Market and enjoy a talent show put on by Montessori students and families. All proceeds directly benefit The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley. The school, celebrating its 40th anniversary, serves children ages 3-14.

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on April 15 and 16.

Incoming freshmen orientation

There will be an orientation meeting for all eighth-grade students and their parents who reside in the Poland School District on April 10. The meeting will take place in the Poland High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Poland High School’s counselors will provide information which will assist incoming freshmen make wise decisions about their course selection. Topics to be covered will include: graduation requirements, end of course exams/graduation points, course levels and curriculum choices, post-secondary/college entrance requirements, athletic participation rules/OHSAA and extracurricular options. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Thursdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place in Faith Chapel Fellowship Church, located at 511 E. Pershing St. in Salem, while at 7:30 p.m. a meeting will take place at New Life Lutheran Church, located at 1181 Churchill-Hubbard Road in Youngstown. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale

The Poland Lions will host a “Treasures of the Trunk Sale” to benefit the Poland Lions Scholarship and Community Funds on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland High School stadium parking lot. The Lions are currently looking for venders for the one-day sale, including crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and venders with garage sale items. There is a limit of 100 spaces, so reserve your space early. Registration is $10 per one parking space prior to May 1. After May 1, the cost is $15 per space. Venders must bring their own tables. Yoga class

Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.
