Newcomers Club of Canfield to meet

The April meeting of the Newcomers Club of Canfield will be hosted by Jill Daley. It will take place on April 11 at the home studio of Darrel Clegg in Canfield. Clegg is a metal jewelry artist who sells his jewelry art online and at many local art shows. The business meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and then the creating starts. They will be making a pendant and earring set for the cost of $25 per person. There will be snacks and cocktails. Daley will need a head count for that evening for the supply inventory. The purpose of the Newcomers Club of Canfield is to provide an opportunity for members of the community in and around Canfield to develop friendships, welcome newcomers and to support the civic, social and charitable life of the community. It is further formed to engage in recreational and social activities in support of these purposes.

Canfield Lions continues fish dinners

Canfield Lions next Fish Dinners for Lent event will be on April 7. Dinner is served from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Dinners are haddock (baked or fried) or macaroni and cheese or haluski or pierogis. Dinner comes with your choice of one side from french fries, macaroni and cheese, pierogis or haluski. This includes cole slaw or green beans, a roll, drink and dessert. The cost is $11 and take out is available.

Reptiles and Amphibians of NE Ohio

Join Mahoning County OSU Extension and fellow industry professionals to learn about spring peepers and other reptiles and amphibians in Northeast Ohio. Speakers for the program are David Dimitrie, PhD student from Case Western Reserve University and Teal Richards-Dimitrie, Herpetologist at EnviroScience, Inc. The program will take place April 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds, located at 7265 Columbiana Canfield Road in Canfield. Lord of Life church egg hunt

An Easter Egg Hunt will take place at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 North Broad St. in Canfield, on April 15 beginning at 10 a.m. All Canfield children from infant to age 12 are welcome. The children are to bring a basket in which they will place the eggs that they find. The Easter Bunny is sure to make an appearance. The event will go forward rain or shine.

Worship Schedule Palm Sunday through Easter are as follows: April 9 will be a reading of the Passion at 10:15 a.m., April 12 will be service of the word and healing at 7 p.m., April 13 is Holy Thursday for children at 5 p.m. and service of Holy Communion with foot washing at 7 p.m., April 14 will be Good Friday service, reading of the Passion and procession of the Cross at 7 p.m., April 15 will be the Easter Vigil with Holy Communion at 7 p.m. and April 16 will be Easter brunch at 9:30 a.m., with Service of celebration of the resurrection of the Lord with Holy Communion at 10:15 a.m.

BPJWL April meeting to be April 3

The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on April 3 at 7 p.m. at Glenellen, located at 9661 Market St. in North Lima. League members will be preparing for a raffle based on the Ohio Lottery. Tickets are $5 and are available from any league member. Kirsten Weaver will be the guest speaker that evening. Her program will be about her trip to Jamaica with Therapy Missions – USA Mission Team. They are going to a Mustard Seed Community in Jamaica to do Occupational Therapy work with adults with Developmental Disabilities. Hostesses for the month are Joyce Martin, Sperry Rongone and Chery Smaldino.

Knitting Guild meeting to be April 11

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A brief program on Knitting Slang will be presented and members are encouraged to bring and show their knitted Herringbone Stitch pillows. Anyone interested in information about the guild, joining the guild or donating towards the guild’s charity work can contact wrkg.ohio@gmail.com.

ABWA meeting to be April 11

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will meet on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at A La Cart in Canfield. Dinner will be southern baked chicken, roast beef, potato au gratin, peas and carrots, salad, Jello, cole slaw and dessert. The cost is $18. The speaker for the evening will be Chief Don Hutchinson of the Cardinal Fire Department, to speak on the drug problem in Ohio.

Every penny counts

Join the Canfield library on April 27 at 6:30 p.m. during Money Smart Week and learn some creative (and mostly painless) ways to save money. They’ll get you started on the road to savings with a free piggy bank. This event is for teens and adults.

Take a guess

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during library hours in April. The closest guess wins a small prize. This event is for the family.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Canfield library on April 7 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in April at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library on April 4, 11 and 18 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Fun time for 4s and 5s

Join the Canfield library on April 11 at 11:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and finger plays, and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Family story time

Bring the whole family for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages at the Canfield library on April 18 at 6 p.m. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta move story time

Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in April at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver.

Circuit bugs

Bugs start coming out in April. Using LED lights and batteries, create your very own bug that lights up at the Canfield library on April 1 at 11 a.m. Tweens may also use the library’s SNAP Circuit collection. Snacks will be served. This event is for school-age children.

Robot puppet show

Welcome to an old-fashioned puppet show about Technorella and her annoying step-bots. Will she get to attend the Techno Ball and meet her Cyborg Charming? Make a fun craft following the show at the Canfield library on April 8 at 11 a.m. This event is for children of all ages.

Tales to tails

Sign up to read aloud to a registered therapy dog at the Canfield library on April 5 at 6 p.m. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Each session is 15 minutes. Bring a book of your choice. This event is for children in grades Kindergarten and up. Dogs are provided by K9’s for Compassion, a community partner of Pet Partners. Sign up required by calling 330-744-8636.

Join the Canfield library on April 25 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate stories and activities that will help your child learn about money. Each child will receive a piggy bank. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Lego Mindstorms Robots: part two

Explore the next phase of Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Canfield library on April 22 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Children will work through new stages of building and programming robots with a break to eat, so bring a packed lunch. Attendees must take part one prior to signing up for part two. This is for children in grades 3-7. Space is limited, so register by April 21.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on April 1 at 2:30 p.m. and April 19 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

DIY recycled bird feeders

Come and make a bird feeder from recycled and household materials at the Canfield library on April 4 at 3 p.m. Great for your own backyard or to give as a gift. Snacks will be provided. This program is for teens in grades seven and up.

Recycling 101

Earth Day is April 22. See how you can “go green” in many simple ways at the Canfield library on April 17 at 6:30 p.m., and learn how to upcycle old things into new things by making origami flowers out of old books. This event is for teens and adults.

It’s raining cats and dogs and turtles and frogs

Join in the fun to check out all the new umbrellas in the Canfield library Early Learning Area at the Canfield library during library hours in April. Vote for your favorite umbrella and help us choose our April winner. One vote per person per day, and your vote enters you into a drawing for a $5 gift certificate to Kravitz Express at Canfield library.

Come join the Canfield library on April 17 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided, along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.

Join the Canfield library on April 6 at 6 p.m. for a Thursday night movie where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. Can DNA testing help you determine your ancestry? Discovering the level of genetic relationship you have with other individuals and cultures can be enlightening. You will examine this process, acknowledging the benefits and drawbacks at the Canfield library on April 3 at 6:30 p.m. Registration for all programs is required. If you’re a poet and you know it... Do you have a poem or short story that you would like to share? Come to the Canfield library on April 13 at 6:30 p.m. for open mic night. They will serve tea between performances.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Infirmary lecture

The Canfield Historical Society will present a lecture, “The Mahoning County Infirmary” on April 6 at 7 p.m. In 1855 the Mahoning County Infirmary, commonly called The Pogy, was opened for the purpose of caring for the homeless, handicapped, elderly and poor citizens of the county. The property was located on a large farm on Herbert Road where the Stonebridge housing development is located today. The original building was destroyed by fire and replaced by a compound of structures in 1898. This free lecture is open to anyone who would like to attend. The lecture takes place at the Canfield Historical Society Bond House, located at 44 West Main Street in Canfield, across from the Canfield library. No registration is necessary. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. LDR to host reverse raffle

Legacy Dog Rescue of Ohio (LDR) will host it’s first reverse raffle on April 1 at Avion on the Lake, located at 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. The doors will open at 5 p.m. for games, giveaways and a huge basket auction. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. with the reverse raffle to follow. The grand prize is $1,200.
