Santoro, Alvarez lead YSU over BGSU

Anthony Santoro hit a pair of sacrifice flies, and the Youngstown State baseball team won for the third straight game with a 3-1 victory at Bowling Green on Tuesday.
Javier Alvarez pitched five shutout innings in his first career start, and five relievers followed to hold the Falcons to one run in the pitchers’ duel. Joe King came on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning to earn his ninth save.
The teams combined for 10 hits, and YSU’s Trey Bridis and Web Charles both had two hits.
Bridis and Charles started the top of the fifth off with back-to-back singles to put Penguins at the corners, and Santoro followed with his first sacrifice fly to left field to plate Bridis.
In the seventh, Bridis was hit by a pitch and went to third on another Charles single to set up Santoro’s second sacrifice fly.
YSU (5-16) added a run in the top of the eighth to go up 3-0 when Lorenzo Arcuri led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Bridis’ two-out double.
BGSU (5-16) loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth inning with two walks and a hit batsman, but Jesse Slinger came on to hold the Falcons to just one run. Slinger allowed a sacrifice fly to Joe McGuinness and followed that up with a ground out, a walk and a foul out. The Falcons left the bases loaded in the eighth and stranded 11 runners in the game.
YSU will begin a three-game Horizon League series at Northern Kentucky on Friday at 3 p.m.
Fitch players commit to NCAA football teams
AUSTINTOWN
Three Austintown Fitch senior football players have selected colleges to continue their football careers.
Lawrence Harrington a 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker will attend Walsh University in North Canton. Harrington, a co-captain and three-year letterman had 72 tackles, eight tackles for losses and three sacks druing the 2016 season. He was a first-team linebacker on the All-American Conference all-star team.
Zach Krohn a 5-10, 175-pound outside linebacker and defensive back, will attend Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa. Krohn, a co-captain and three-year letterman had 46 tackles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions in 2016. He was a first-team All-AAC defensive back.
Alec Greathouse a 6-0, 220-pound offensive lineman will also attend Westminster College. Greathouse, who anchored the offensive line for Fitch, was also the team’s long snapper. He was a first-team All-AAC offensive lineman.
Trump will not throw out opening pitch in DC

The Washington Nationals say President Donald Trump has declined an invitation to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before their game on opening day.
A spokeswoman for the baseball team said Tuesday that the White House said Trump would not be at next week’s game at Nationals Park against the Miami Marlins because of a scheduling conflict.
Washington hosts Miami next Monday afternoon.
President Barack Obama threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Nationals’ opener in 2010, marking the 100th anniversary of a presidential pitch to start the season. William Howard Taft first did it on April 14, 1910.
USF player cut after road-rage shooting

A University of South Florida football player who was shot during a violent road-rage incident has been cut from the team.
Coach Charlie Strong announced Tuesday that senior safety Hassan Childs had been dismissed. The 22-year-old had one more season of eligibility.
Tampa police say Childs was about a mile from the USF campus Saturday night when he twice pointed a gun at a car carrying a couple and their 3-year-old son. The man driving the car drew his own gun and fired three times. Childs was hospitalized with gunshot wounds but expected to make a full recovery.
Both Childs and the other driver have concealed weapon permits.
Childs is charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of misdemeanor marijuana possession.
