‘Beauty’ dances off with top box-office spot

LOS ANGELES

Not all reboots are created equal.

This weekend at the box office, nostalgia-driven fare was everywhere, from “Beauty and the Beast” to “Power Rangers” and “CHIPS,” producing both successful and underwhelming results.

On the high end, Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” continued enchanting audiences in its second weekend in theaters, easily topping the charts with $88.3 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. On the low end, Warner Bros.’ raunchy, R-rated “CHIPS” debuted in seventh place with $7.6 million.

In the middle was Lionsgate’s “Power Rangers,” which earned a solid $40.5 million to grab the No. 2 spot. The PG-13 take on the campy 1990s television show tells the origin story of the Power Rangers with a diverse teenage cast of relative newcomers.

Rounding out the top five were “Kong: Skull Island,” $14.4 million, third place; “Life,” $12.6 million, fourth place; and “Logan,” $10.1 million, fifth place.

Banderas recovers from heart attack

MADRID

Spanish film star Antonio Banderas says he has recovered from a heart attack that he had in January.

The 56-year-old Banderas tells Spanish media that “I suffered a heart attack on Jan. 26, but it wasn’t serious and hasn’t caused any damage.”

Banderas says he underwent a procedure to place three stents in his arteries, adding that “it hasn’t been as dramatic as some have written.” His visit to a Swiss clinic had led to speculation about the health of the star.

Banderas spoke Saturday at a film festival in his hometown of Malaga in southern Spain, where he received a lifetime achievement award for his career as an actor, director and producer.

Tyson suffers loss in Latin America bout

NEW YORK

Over his career, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson recorded 50 wins and six losses. But he recently notched another big loss in Latin America – this time as a coach of a bird.

Tyson traveled to Suriname as part of the new Fusion TV documentary series “Outpost “ and was soundly beaten when he entered a bird in a songbird contest, a cherished local tradition.

Cameras captured Iron Mike as he learned about the contest, located a bird to enter – he dubbed the tiny guy “Little Mike” – but then suffered a TKO when a competing champion cheeped and peeped more than his bird did in the same 15-minute period.

The series, which kicked off Sunday with Tyson’s episode, mixes travel adventure, history and journalism to shine a light on global stories. The first season focuses on Latin America and includes as hosts “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” bandleader Jon Batiste and “Brain Games” star Jason Silva.
