Phantoms fall in OT to Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA

The Youngstown Phantoms squandered a three-goal lead on Saturday and fell in overtime to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 4-3.

Austin Pooley, Alex Esposito and Michael Karow scored the goals for Youngstown. Pooley, Eric Esposito, Brandon Estes and Nicholar Werbik had assists.

Goaltender Britt League, making his first start in almost three months, stopped 28 shots.

Today at 4 p.m., the Phantoms will play their final road game of the regular season against the Chicago Steel.

The Phantoms (31-18-5-1, 68 points) and Green Bay Gamblers (32-21-2-2, 68 points) are tied for the final playoff berth in the USHL’s Eastern Conference. The Phantoms have two games in hand on the Gamblers.

Curbstone coaches set for weekly luncheon

The Curbstone Coaches will have a noon luncheon on Monday at The Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road. The public is welcome to attend.

Plans are under way for the 50th Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony which is set for May 7 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

The keynote speaker will be former Oakland Raider offensive lineman and local businessman Ed Muransky. Tickets are available by contacting Mariel Sallee at 330-519-6819.

Tickets cost $50 for any inductee over the last 50 years in honor of the Curbstone Coaches’ 50th anniversary.

Nikki My Darling wins at MVRC

Nikki My Darling ($3.80) proved a popular winner as she scored a two-length victory in the $75,000 Southern Park Stakes for Ohio bred three-year-old fillies on Saturday at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course.

Ridden by Luis Colon, the three-year-old Creative Cause filly tracked the early pacesetters thru the opening stages before taking off after Conumdrum Red entering the home stretch, and after catching that one, pulled clear in the final seventy yards to record her first Stakes victory.

The official running time on a track labeled fast was 1:15.64 after fractions of 23.70 and 48.25.

Dayton’s Archie Miller hired by Indiana

Indiana has hired Archie Miller as its new coach.

The move comes less than 24 hours after UCLA coach Steve Alford said he wouldn’t take the job and nine days after Tom Crean was fired after nine seasons.

Miller has spent the last six seasons as the coach at Dayton. He led the Flyers to a 139-63 record, the last two Atlantic 10 regular-season titles and NCAA Tournament appearances each of the past four seasons. Before going to Dayton, he was an assistant at Arizona, Ohio State, North Carolina State and Western Kentucky.

The school says it plans to introduce Miller at a news conference Monday.

Crew SC beat Portland on late winner

Niko Hansen scored in his MLS debut, Ola Kamara got a goal in his third consecutive game and the Columbus Crew beat the Portland Timbers 3-2 on Saturday night.

Hansen, the ninth pick in the 2017 SuperDraft, came on in the 60th minute for Justin Meram and gave Columbus (2-1-1) a 3-2 lead with his first goal in the 84th minute.
