The village will monitor the recycling program located to the rear of village hall, 300 E. Main St. There have been people placing trash in the recycling bins. They will identify the violators and take whatever legal action necessary to stop the violations of the program.

These recycling sites are provided for public use, but only the recycling items listed on the outside of the containers are acceptable. All other items are classified as illegal.

Violations can result in fines up to $500.

Puppetry program

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University students will bring a puppetry program to fourth-grade students in the Success After Six program at Youngstown Community School on Tuesday. This program will help students bring a story to life through puppetry.

Students will have the opportunity to create their very own puppets and accessories using 3-D technology through Advanced Methods in Innovation’s transportable 3-D lab, which includes 3-D printers, vinyl cutters, a digital sewing machine and more.

The program will run Monday through Thursday after school from 3:15 to 5 p.m. for a six-week period. The hope is to eventually have this program available for all fourth- through sixth-graders at YCS.

YSU prof gets award

YOUNGSTOWN

Vicki Kress, Youngstown State University professor of counseling and director of clinical mental health and addiction counseling, received the Gilbert and Kathleen Wrenn Award for a Humanitarian and Caring Person from the American Counseling Association.

The award is a prestigious national award and is presented to an American Medical Association member who gives to others without fanfare or expectation of reward other than the personal satisfaction of seeing other people made happier. Kress also received a $1,000 honorarium at the American Counseling Association Conference in San Francisco on March 18.

Road project delayed

SHARON, PA.

Due to recent inclement weather, the start of an improvement project on Routes 718 and 760 in Sharon has been rescheduled. Work is expected to begin Monday with a detour to begin Wednesday.

The work marks the beginning of the third and final phase of a multiyear project.

The third phase will occur during the 2017 and 2018 construction seasons and focus on a half-mile long section of Routes 718 and 760 (South Dock Street).

Routes 718 and 760 in the project area will remain open for southbound traffic throughout the construction but will be closed to northbound traffic. A detour for northbound traffic will be posted using Route 18 and East State Street (Route 3008).

Work will include road reconstruction, updated sidewalks, lighting and drainage and construction of a single-lane roundabout at South Dock Street and Connelly Boulevard.

The contractor is Kirila Contractors of Brookfield. The contract cost is $4.1 million, which is to be paid entirely with federal funds.

O, AB blood needed

CLEVELAND

The American Red Cross is issuing a call for platelet and type O negative and AB blood donors to make an appointment to give after severe winter weather in some parts of the country caused about 250 Red Cross blood drives to cancel in March, resulting in more than 8,500 uncollected blood and platelet donations.

Platelets, type O negative blood and type AB plasma are three of the most in-demand blood products by hospitals. Those who give can help patients locally or across the country as the Red Cross has the ability to move blood products where and when they are needed most.

Police will get new van

WEATHERSFIELD

The Weathersfield Township Police Department has received a grant award from the Ohio Development Services Agency for $55,354 to purchase a new prisoner transport van.

The collaborative grant was applied for by the police department, with the cooperation of the City of Niles Police Department, the Village of McDonald Police Department and the Niles Municipal Court District.

New YSU program

YOUNGSTOWN

An agreement between Youngstown State University and the University of Akron School of Law will shorten the time to earn a law degree.

YSU students will be able to get a bachelor’s degree and a law degree in six years, rather than the traditional seven years, through an accelerated program – students spend three years at YSU and Akron.

The program will be open to all students in any major in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Williamson College of Business Administration.

Admissions representatives from Akron will be at in Williamson Hall at noon for CLASS students and 4 p.m. for business students April 5 to present the new program.

Youngstown State University’s online master of Business Administration program ranks 13th on “Best Online MBA Program: Top 20 Deal” by Great College Deals. The program was recognized for having instructors with strong academic backgrounds, vast teaching experience and credible professional knowledge in class topics and curriculum teach courses at the graduate level.

The program offers the same rigorous coursework as the brick-and-mortar business master’s program at YSU. It is designed to help enhance leadership skills, increase business expertise and develop strategic thinking skills.
