Children tried to survive the different activities set up at the Austintown library on March 11.

Austintown librarian Nikki Puhalla created a program based on the “I Survived” book series by Lauren Tarshis. There were several stations set up for the children to participate in to learn about the different types of disasters described in the books.

There was a station where children made a tornado out of two pop bottles taped together with water inside, a station where they could made a boat out of foil and put it in water then add marbles to the boat to see how many marbles it can hold before it sinks, and several other hands-on activities that represented other disasters that were written in the books.

One of the favorite stations among the children was the volcano station. There were supplies set out for children to create a volcano out of clay and a cardboard tube. Once the children finished making their volcanoes, they brought them to an empty pool where they then put baking soda and vinegar into the volcano to try and create an eruption.

At each of the stations, the “I Survived” books were set out for the children and adults to look at. Along with the “I Survived” books, there were other books set up that people could check out about the different topics that the activities were based on.
