The Boardman High School bands hosted their annual Winter Concert on March 2.

The concert featured the symphonic band, the wind ensemble, the percussion ensemble, woodwind trio and trombone quartet. The students performed musical selections from “West Side Story,” “The Klaxon,” “See Rock City” and several others. Members of the BHS Choral Music Program worked with Linda Smrek to join the wind ensemble perform a piece called “As All the Heavens Were a Bell.”

Senior trumpet soloist David Dutko performed “Fantasie Brillante” with the help of the wind ensemble. Dutko has performed with jazz 1, Boardman symphony orchestra, pit orchestra for BHS Drama Guild and St. Luke Music Ministry in addition to the wind ensemble and marching band.

The wind ensemble used the concert as an opportunity to show the audience the music they are preparing to perform for the OMEA District 5 Large Group Adjacent Event. The wind ensemble is one of two groups in District 5 entering Class AA, which requires playing the most difficult music.

The bands were under the direction of Thomas Ruggieri, Timothy Tuite and Michael Shevock.

The Boardman bands have several events coming up in March. They will be performing at a Youngstown Phantoms hockey game, in the St. Patrick’s Day parade and several others. A list of programs coming up can be found on www.boardmanband.org.
