YOUNGSTOWN

The Rotary Club of Youngstown was founded Feb. 1, 1915, and celebrated its 102nd anniversary March 3 at the Youngstown Country Club.

Several members were inducted as Fellows of the Paul Harris Society of Rotary International during the celebration, which recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the Rotary Foundation.

The Paul Harris Society was created in 1957 to encourage donations to the Rotary Foundation to fulfill its six global initiatives: promoting peace, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, encouraging growth in local economies, eradicating polio and fighting disease.

Rotarians who donate at least $1,000 are eligible to be inducted to the fellowship.

Notable fellows include Jimmy Carter, former U.S. president; Boris Yeltsin, former Russian president; Mother Theresa, Nobel Peace Prize recipient; James Lovell, U.S. astronaut; Javier Perez de Cuellar, U.N. secretary-general; and Dr. Jonas Salk, developer of the polio vaccine.

Youngstown Rotary members inducted into the fellowship during the anniversary celebration were Alfred J. Fleming, Charles J. McCrudden, Christine Rhoades, Deborah J. Esbenshade, Terry L. Barringer, Robert E. Schulick, James Jarvis, Joanne M. Schulick, Scott R. Schulick, Suzanne H. Fleming and Donald E. Foley Jr.

McCrudden and Jarvis have been recognized once previously as Paul Harris Society fellows, Fleming twice, and Esbenshade and Scott Schulick six times.

The club meets from noon to 1 p.m. every Wednesday in the Manchester Room of the downtown YMCA.
