1v Pass 1u ?

What call would you make?

A. A one no trump overcall, even if both opponents have bid, still shows the equivalent of a one no trump opening, about 15-18. Bid one no trump.

Q. North-South vulnerable, as South, you hold:

xQ 10 8 3 uK Q 8 vK J 5 w10 9 3

Partner opens two no trump, 20-21. What call would you make?

A. You have a no trump hand and your combined assets are just short of what is needed for slam in no trump. Bid three no trump. Don’t even bother with Stayman.

Q. East-West vulnerable, as South, you hold:

2w Pass ?

What call would you make?

A. A jump to three diamonds here would show invitational values which you don’t quite have. Bid two diamonds.

Q. Both vulnerable, as South, you hold:

xA Q xK 7 5 4 3 vK 9 6 wQ 7 4

With the opponents passing, you open one heart and partner jumps to three hearts, invitational. What call would you make?

A. We accept all invitations when we have 14 or more points. Bid four hearts.

Q. Neither vulnerable, as South, you hold:

xK J 10 7 4 u5 3 vK w8 5 4 3 2

Partner opens one spade and right-hand opponent doubles. What call would you make?

A. This may not be your hand. Jump to four spades and let them figure it out, if they can.

Q. East-West vulnerable, as South, you hold:

What call would you make?

A. We don’t like to play in a low-level doubled contract with a primary fit for partner that partner doesn’t know about yet. Partner’s spade values may be wasted in a diamond contract, so we would just bid three diamonds. A jump to four is not a bad bid.
