Youngstown Saxon Club honored its Woman and Man of the Year on March 18 at the 41st annual President’s goulash dinner.

Carmella Markel was honored as Woman of the Year by Ladies Lodge Branch 22 of the Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons, and Martin Eberth III received recognition from the Men’s Lodge Branch 30.

Markel grew up in Hubbard, the daughter of Louis and Anna DeSantis. She was valedictorian of Hubbard High School Class of 1959 and graduated from Trumbull Memorial School of Nursing in 1962.

She worked for 44 years as a registered nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. She and her husband, Mike, live in North Jackson and have a blended family of four children and eight grandchildren.

They are members of the Youngstown Saxon Club, Gethsemane Lutheran Church in North Jackson and the North Jackson VFW. Carmella has served as financial secretary of Branch 22 and is a member of its Ladies Bocce League and a regular helper at the Saxon Club’s pork dinners. She was named the branch’s Mother of the Year in 2016.

Eberth was born in 1941 to Marie and Martin Eberth Jr. He owned a cleaning business with his brother, Richard Eberth, before joining the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 396 from which he retired after 50 years.

He served as president of the local Saxon Juniors for several years and then as vice president of the national Saxon Juniors for two years. He assisted with moving the club to its current location as well as building the pavilion. Eberth has served as a Branch 30 trustee and an ATS Convention delegate as well as an honor member of Branch 30.

He and his brother also orchestrated and run the spring-to-autumn Saxon Flea Market.

A lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley, he has three children and is a member of various sporting and gun clubs.

Also recognized at the event were 42-year, 50-year, 60-year and 70-year members.

The Rev. Langley Collins gave the invocation, and music was provided by the Saxon Culture Group Brass Band. Mistress of ceremonies was June Hoelzel, Branch 22 president.
