EXCELLING IN EDUCATION

Diona Williams, a student in the early-childhood education program at Choffin Career and Technical Center, is the Youngstown City School District’s Student of the Month.

The senior, who also studies STEM at Chaney, was surprised to find out she had been chosen recipient for the honor.

In nominating Diona, Richard Scarsella, Choffin’s vocational special-education supervisor, wrote about how she has perfect attendance and has been a student ambassador for two years. She also earned straight A’s in her Choffin courses.

Diona believes it’s to difficult to catch up if she misses a day of school. Her mother, who also attended Choffin, is the same way, she said

“I do get sick, but I still go to school,” she said.

As a student ambassador, Diona is a leader and a problem- solver among her peers. She plans to own and operate her own children’s day care center. “I love kids,” Diona said.

Scarsella wrote that Diona is always willing to help and volunteer her time and “she’s a great example of a future teacher.”

Julie Cheslik is a 28-year veteran of the city schools, and for her, teaching isn’t just a job. It allows her to help others, a passion that’s rooted in her spirituality.

She’s quick to point out, though, that she’s in good company.

“There are so many wonderful teachers in the Youngstown City Schools,” she said.

Cheslik, who is in her third year as a literacy coach, is the winner of this month’s Teacher of the Month. Courtney Angelo, a teacher at Harding Elementary School, where Cheslik works this year, nominated her colleague for the recognition.

Angelo credits Cheslik for her upbeat attitude even during uncertain times.

“Julie is one of the most positive people I’ve ever met,” Angelo wrote. “She always finds a way to make us think of a good outcome of each situation. She never blames us as teachers, but always supports us and encourages us to keep working through the tough times.”
