2 face drug charges

GIRARD

Police arrested two people on drug-abuse charges on the same street within a half-hour Thursday night.

Police pulled over John Feeland, 21, of Hubbard, about 11 p.m. for passing a stop sign at Dearborn Street and Carver Avenue, according to a police report.

The officer said he smelled marijuana and asked Freeland if he had any marijuana in the car. According to police, Freeland said yes and surrendered a small pill bottle containing marijuana and a pipe.

Police arrested Feeland on charges of drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police also pulled over Titania Haskins, 30, of Youngstown, for speeding on Dearborn Street about 11:30 p.m. The officer reportedly smelled marijuana and asked if she had any in the car. She said yes and surrendered a cigarette that contained a small amount of marijuana, according to a report.

She is charged with drug abuse and was released on a summons.

Officers revive man

AUSTINTOWN

First-responders revived a man from an apparent overdose Thursday morning, according to a police report.

Officers found a man on the floor of the basement bedroom in a Westminster Avenue home. According to a report, officers found a syringe and spoon on a dresser next to him. The homeowner told police the victim was a recovering drug addict and family friend who recently completed rehab. He found the victim unresponsive after going downstairs to get his keys.

Firefighters and paramedics administered Narcan, an opioid-overdose antidote, to revive the victim, who was then transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. No charges are being pursued.

New traffic signal

AUSTINTOWN

The Mahoning County engineer announced a new traffic signal will be coming to the intersection of Mahoning Avenue and Victoria Road in spring 2018. The project is expected to cost $200,000, and the engineer said a minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained during construction. John Woodard at the engineer’s office will accept questions and comments before April 1.

Feed the hungry

YOUNGSTOWN

Through April 15, Giant Eagle customers at select stores in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties can help feed those in need by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon at the cash register to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s Check Out Hunger program.

The donation will be added to the customer’s bill. Customers also may donate nonperishable food items by placing them in designated bins at the front of the stores.

“Giant Eagle stores in our community set a record last year, raising more than $100,000,” said Michael Iberis, food bank executive director. Second Harvest provides food to those in need in the tri-county area through 148 programs provided by hunger-relief organizations. BOARDMAN

Boardman Civic Association’s community awards dinner to honor the township’s top projects and business people will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center. Dinner is at 6, with the presentations at 6:30. Awards will be given to 2016’s best new building, renovated property and business person.
