Children created sock puppets before putting on a puppet show for guests at the Boardman library on Feb. 20.
Karen Saunders, Boardman children’s librarian, laid out supplies along a table for the children to make their own sock puppets. There were socks, markers, glitter glue, pom-poms and various other supplies to decorate the socks with.
The children were divided into four groups by age and each of the groups put on a performance with the puppets they made and with some that were already provided. The performances were “BINGO the Dog,” “Three Billy Goats Gruff,” “The Goat in the Chile Patch” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.”
Some of the children’s moms and grandmas volunteered to help the children make their puppets and help with the performance. When the puppets were finished and the lines were rehearsed, several parents showed up to watch the finished product.
Pat Fagan, director of the Youngstown Playhouse, attended the event to promote the Youngstown Playhouse, as well as help the children with their performances. She encouraged the children and their caregivers to come watch plays and even audition for the upcoming play, “The Jungle Book.”
When the children finished their performances, they could take the puppets that they made home with them. The children were applauded with a job well done and spent a fun afternoon off school and in the library.
