Incoming freshmen orientation
There will be an orientation meeting for all eighth-grade students and their parents who reside in the Poland School District on April 10. The meeting will take place in the Poland High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Poland High School’s counselors will provide information which will assist incoming freshmen make wise decisions about their course selection. Topics to be covered will include: graduation requirements, end of course exams/graduation points, course levels and curriculum choices, post-secondary/college entrance requirements, athletic participation rules/OHSAA and extracurricular options. Historical Society meeting to be March 21
The Poland Historical Society will meet at the Little Red Schoolhouse on March 21 at 6:30 p.m. The Schoolhouse is located at 4515 Center Road (Route 224 and Struthers Road intersection) in Poland Township. The program at 7:30 p.m. “Rafting on the Ohio River” will be presented by Ted Heineman.
Seniors Group meeting to be March 20
The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on March 20 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Hostesses for this St. Patrick’s themed meeting will be Janet Will, Mary Sass, Judy Fields and Josephine Sylvester. Lunch will be served at 12 p.m. followed by Bingo and card games. Newcomers Club meeting to be March 22
A March luncheon is being planned by Newcomers of Mahoning Valley. They will be meeting on March 22 at Davidson’s Restaurant in Austintown at 11:30 a.m. for greeting and socializing. Someone from the Veteran’s Administration will be speaking about what they do to help the veterans of this country. The members will be donating toiletries and non-perishable food to be given and distributed to needy veterans by the VA. They will also be presenting the nomination of officers for 2017-18 to be voted on next month. Other activities planned for the membership is a birthday luncheon, needlework, book club, movie group and Roundtowners. They welcome anyone who is looking to learn more about the community and interested in forming new friendships. Anyone may join, especially if you’ve had a change in your life and would like to try something that can be stimulating and worthwhile. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pi Day Trail Run to be March 18
The Academy of the Arts students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will host the first PI Day Trail Run Challenge on the school campus on March 18. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the race will kick off at 10 a.m. The cost is $25 if you register before and $30 the day of the race. T-Shirts are guaranteed to all participants pre-registered by March 4 and a free pie will be given to every runner that finishes. Lego mindstorms robots part 1
Discover how to build, program and test Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Poland library on March 29 from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Bring a packed lunch. Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on March 21 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International at the Poland library on March 22 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for those in grades 1-4.
Trim a Tree for March
Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours. This event is for children of all ages.
Tie-dye party

Color your world
Join the Poland library on March 29 at 7 p.m. for a relaxing evening of adult coloring. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own. Colorful light refreshments will be served. This event is for teens and adults.
Bonding with babies, books and signs
Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library on March 29 at 10 a.m. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale
The Poland Lions will host a “Treasures of the Trunk Sale” to benefit the Poland Lions Scholarship and Community Funds on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland High School stadium parking lot. The Lions are currently looking for venders for the one-day sale, including crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and venders with garage sale items. There is a limit of 100 spaces, so reserve your space early. Registration is $10 per one parking space prior to May 1. After May 1, the cost is $15 per space. Venders must bring their own tables. Yoga class
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.
