Mothers and daughters spent time together during the first Cupcakes and Canvas night at Dobbins Elementary on Feb. 23.

Previously, Dobbins has had mother and son and father and daughter nights, but this year the school wanted to try something different. The PTO began planning for the event in November by gathering supplies, getting volunteers and much more to make the night a success.

There were three main areas for the mothers and daughters to participate in. There was a place to paint their canvas, there was a DJ in the gym for dancing and cupcakes to eat and a backdrop for the pairs to get their picture taken.

Theresa Rapp, the PTO event chair, said this created a good opportunity for mothers and their daughters to spend quality time together.

“It’s good mother-daughter bonding time. Everybody’s schedules are so hectic, so it’s a good time for moms and daughters to get together,” said Rapp.

More than 100 students showed up and brought their mothers, or any woman in their life that was important.

Matt Batcho, an abstract artist, was invited to help lead the mothers and daughters during the canvas painting part of the night. Batcho hosts sip and paint parties and was happy to help bring the arts and creativity into Dobbins.

“I think these events are great. It brings all the kids together and there’s nothing like painting. It’s a good time, especially seeing how happy the kids are,” said Batcho.

Many of the mothers who came back were Poland graduates and some attended Dobbins, so coming back to the school gave them the opportunity to create new memories with their daughters.

Dobbins will be hosting a father and son night on March 9, which will have a Mad Scientist theme for the guests to enjoy.
