Youngstown State has posted a job opening for head coach of the men’s basketball program online.

Minimum qualifications listed include a “minimum of six years of successful collegiate coaching and recruiting experience at the NCAA Division I or II level.”

Desired qualifications listed are “Successful collegiate Head coaching experience at the NCAA Division I or II level.”

In Charles Grove’s column in Wednesday’s edition, Mount Union head basketball coach Mike Fuline’s record was incorrectly reported. His record at Mount Union is 101-64.

YSU Hall of Famer Campana dies

Tom Campana, a football standout for the Penguins from 1946-49 died on Wednesday.

Campana was inducted to the YSU Hall of Fame in 1993.

During his four years at YSU, the Hubbard alumnus helped the Penguins to a 23-9-3 overall record.

After earning his degree, Campana coached for 36 years, most notably at Kent Roosevelt, posting a 158-57 overall mark, which included six league championships.

Lakeview’s Pavlansky commits to Kent State

Lakeview girls basketball player Annie Pavlansky has committed to play college basketball at Kent State, the player announced via Twitter on Wednesday.

Pavlansky concluded her junior season having already crossed the 1,000-point mark in January.

Sophomore wins Ms. Basketball

CANTON

Canton McKinley’s Kierstan Bell is the first sophomore to win the award in its 30-year history.

Bell averaged 26.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.2 steals, 3.0 assists and 2.3 blocks this season and is being recruited by Ohio State and other Big Ten schools.

Boardman’s Gabriele makes All-Ohio team

Boardman girls basketball player Lauren Gabriele was named to the Division I All-Ohio third team by the Associated Press on Wednesday. The Spartan senior averaged 15.5 points per game.

Austintown Fitch’s Sabria Hunter and Warren Harding’s Kia Allen were honorable-mention selections.

Track officials clinic set for April 2

The Greater Youngstown Track Officials will hold its annual clinic on Sunday, April 2 at 2 p.m. at the WATTS on the campus of Youngstown State University. One of the topics will be umpiring, including hurdles, distances races, sprints and relays.

Athletes will be on hand to assist in creating a real-world experience. Long-time district, regional and state championship referee Jim Fox will be one of the presenters at this event. Ed Katzman also will be a presenter.

This clinic is open to any coach, official or prospective official and will count as a local rules meeting for officials. A limited number of starter shells will be available for purchase at this event for $35. Contact B.J. Duckworth at gytoa@yahoo.com for more information.

Federer beats Nadal at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, CALIF.

Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-3 at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday in a fourth-round match that saw the longtime rivals meeting much earlier in a tournament than usual.

Federer broke Nadal four times in advancing to the quarterfinals in just over an hour. Although Nadal owns a 23-13 lead in their series, Federer has won the past three in a row, including an epic comeback in the Australian Open final two months ago.
