Pirates’ Kang delayed by U.S. visa issues

bradenton, fla.

Pittsburgh infielder Jung Ho Kang was placed on the restricted list by the Pirates while he is delayed in South Korea by visa issues related to a recent DUI arrest.

“It just is a reflection of the reality that he’s not here today on March 11, and we need to get him into Bradenton to prepare for the 2017 season,” Pirates president Frank Coonelly said Saturday.

While on the restricted list, Kang does not count against the 40-man roster or the 25-man active roster.

Kang received an eight-month suspended prison sentence last week after a DUI arrest in December, his third in South Korea. The sentence was suspended for two years.

“This is not a disciplinary matter,” Coonelly said. “And if he is not here and not available to play on a restricted list, he wouldn’t be paid — but it’s not a disciplinary matter.”

In a statement after Kang was sentenced March 3, Coonelly said the team will withhold judgment until meeting with Kang.

Big NFL prospect injures leg at workouts

seattle

Sidney Jones, a potential first-round draft pick, injured his left leg during defensive back drills in pro day workouts at the University of Washington on Saturday.

The Washington cornerback was performing one of his final drills of the session when he quickly pulled up and went down to the turf at the Dempsey Indoor Center.

As he was beginning to make a break out of his backpedal, Jones immediately began favoring his left leg and tumbled to the ground. Jones began to grab at the underside of his leg after coming to a stop.

He was helped to his feet by fellow defensive back Budda Baker and to the sideline by Washington head coach Chris Petersen.

After brief conversations on the sideline, Jones hopped on the back of a cart and was taken out of the building.

Spurs’ Aldridge out with heart arrhythmia

san antonio

San Antonio Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge will be out indefinitely due to a minor heart arrhythmia, the latest occurrence of heart issues for the five-time All-Star.

Aldridge will have further tests before the Spurs can determine just how long he will be out, the team announced on Saturday. Aldridge has had heart issues in the past and was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome — an abnormality that can cause a rapid heartbeat — as a rookie in 2007.

“All parties have concluded that at the current time it is best for Aldridge to refrain from play until further tests and examinations are completed,” the Spurs said in a statement.

Aldridge missed the final seven games of his rookie season after doctors used an ablation — a procedure designed to treat tissue in the heart to make the heartbeat regular again — to treat him and get him back on the court. He also needed an ablation during training camp in 2011, but was able to return to the court in time to play in the preseason and made the All-Star team for Portland that season.
