SENIOR SIDELIGHTS
Gathering Place event, sponsored by Lord of Life Church, Canfield, will meet at 11 a.m. Monday at Lord of Life Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield. Karen Kannal will speak about human trafficking. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that takes place the second Monday of each month.
Girard Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave. will offer the following opportunities: 9 a.m. Friday, St. Patrick’s Day potluck breakfast; 9:15 a.m. March 21, bingo with Windsor House; 10 a.m. March 27, snack facts; noon March 30, picnic potluck luncheon. Coffee bar every morning, 8:30 to 11 a.m.; fitness rooms open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; 5 p.m. second Wednesday of every month, Fourth Ward Block Watch monthly meetings; 9:30 Thursdays, movies are offered with popcorn and hot chocolate; 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Yoga classes ($5/class) and noon to 1 p.m. Fridays, Tai Chi ($5/class). The Center also offers assistance with Medicare, prescription assistance and many other senior citizen issues by appointment. Niles S.C.O.P.E. Senior Center, 14 E. State St., will offer the following activities: March 21, appointments are being taken for mammograms from 1:30 to 3 p.m. with the Mercy Health Mammovan. Insurance will be accepted, those with no insurance will be eligible for a free mammogram. Registration is required for all activities by calling the center at 330-544-3676.
Ohio Living Park Vista Senior Center, 1110 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, has scheduled the following activities: Monday, diabetic empowerment education program at 10 a.m.; Tuesday, computer class and brush, knife and needle club at 10 a.m., computer class and beginner and intermediate bridge and party bridge at noon, caregiver support group at 1 p.m., Drums Alive at 2:30; Wednesday, walk for wellness at 9:30 a.m., watercolors at 10, tap class at noon, 500 bid card club at 1 p.m. and line dancing at 1:30; Thursday, woodcarvers at 9 a.m., Fun day at Boardman Park and diabetic support group at 10, multi-media art and socialization and toning exercise at noon and Texas Hold’em at 2 p.m. (looking for players); and Friday, Youngstown Fun Day at 10 a.m., and chair yoga at 1 p.m. Free income tax service through April 7 from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Fridays by appointment only. Senior Corps Retired Senior Volunteer Program, located in First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 201 Wick Ave., is under the Corp. for National and Community Service. It is a volunteer program whose aim is to link volunteers, age 55 and over, with a variety of volunteer opportunities within their community. There are sites throughout Mahoning and Trumbull counties with opportunities such as senior companionship, transcription for museums, meal delivery for home bound seniors, construction and many other opportunities. There is no maximum requirement of volunteer hours. There is a short application, and the program coordinator will meet with volunteers to match them with their preferred site based on their interests, skills and location.
