STATE WRESTLING DAY 2 ROUNDUP

DIVISION I

Austintown Fitch: Gus Sutton’s (120) magic run in Columbus was halted by reigning state champ Brendan Fenton out of Elyria. Sutton took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Fenton tied the match with a reversal. Fenton worked his way to a 5-2 lead in the third. Sutton got one last takedown with 10 seconds left, but he ran out of time and lost, 6-4.

Andrew Fairbanks (138) was the hard-luck loser in the quarterfinals. He went ahead 1-0 in the second period off an escape, but the lead didn’t stand up. Cincinnati Elder’s Jake Meridieth scored a reversal in the final minute to win, 2-1. He remains alive after a 4-3 victory against Massillion Perry’s Zain Tittle and a 3-2 win against Louisville’s Jax Leonard.

DIVISION II

Beaver Local: Skyler Lasure (120) guaranteed a place after he took a 4-0 decision vs. Indian Valley’s Dalton Burcher in the first round of consolations. He was pinned by Circleville’s Caleb Brooks to slide into the seventh-eighth place match. Quinton Bookman (126) was eliminated after losing 9-1 to Ashland’s Matthew Taylor.

Canfield: Dominic Cooper fell in the semifinals to St. Paris Graham’s Gage Braun, 3-2. Anthony D’Alesio (152) defeated Mentor Lake Catholic’s Collin Langer in a 7-5 sudden victory and is still in contention for third place after a 3-1 decision against LaGrange Keystone’s Garrett Coe. Tyler Stein (195) was eliminated after getting pinned by Alliance’s Jerrell Martin.

Girard: Jack DelGarbino dropped his semifinal match to Wapakoneta’s Landon Hall, 5-2. Dakota McCloskey (120) dropped an 8-2 decision to Medina Buckeye’s Eric Bartos and was eliminated by Mentor Lake Catholic’s Hunter Ryan. He finishes his wrestling career as the program’s all-time leader in victories with 154.

Howland: Brandon Matlock (285) scored a third-period pin against Hamilton Ross’ Karsen Chasteen to guarantee a place. He can still climb further up the podium after beating Toledo Central Catholic’s Demarko Craig.

West Branch: Dylan Miller (145) dropped out of the champions bracket after he lost by technical fall to Wauseon’s Sandro Ramirez. He was eliminated after Bishop Fenwick’s Alex Kowal pinned him.

DIVISION III

Columbiana: Tim Davin (285) was eliminated after he gave up a takedown to Massilion Tuslaw’s Brayden Philips with two seconds left in overtime. He previously fell out of the quarterfinals after getting pinned by New Lebanon Dixie’s Cameron Coffman. Davin was the Clippers’ first state qualifier in 30 years.
