Couple indicted for East Side murder

A Mahoning County grand jury indicted two people in the death of a man found Feb. 20 in a burning sport utility vehicle.

Indicted were Terrell Martin, 37, of Winona Drive, also known as Tyrell Martin, and Lyric Moore, 21, of Tyrell Avenue.

Authorities say the pair killed Zachary Howell, 40, in an SUV that belonged to him that was found burning behind a vacant home on Knapp Avenue on the far East Side.

Police arrested Martin and Moore on March 1.

The pair are charged with the aggravated murder of Howell, aggravated burglary and kidnapping with a firearm specification and with tampering with evidence.

Martin is additionally charged with illegal possession of a .40-caliber gun.

Police said all the offenses were committed Feb. 20.

Howell’s body was so badly burned that the Mahoning County coroner has yet to formally identify him because of a lack of dental records with which to compare his remains.

Police, however, are operating under the assumption the victim is Howell because the SUV was registered to him and he has been missing since the vehicle was found.

Police were able to link Moore and Martin to the crime because they found Moore’s cellphone at the crime scene.

An affidavit attached to a criminal complaint in municipal court said the two took Howell from his home in Campbell early on Feb. 20. They had a plan to take him the morning before, but that went awry, according to the affidavit.

In an unrelated case, Jamar Houser, 26, of West Delason Avenue, was indicted Thursday on a charge of being a felon with a gun for having a 9 mm handgun Dec. 6. He was convicted in 2012 of improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation and cannot have or own a gun.

In another case, Houser had faced the death penalty when he was charged with the Jan. 23, 2010, aggravated murder of Angeline Fimognari in the St. Dominic Church parking lot, but, on May 24, 2012, Judge Lou A. D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court dismissed that case at the prosecution’s request.

The dismissal was accompanied by an announcement from prosecutors that a palm print left at the scene indicated another man, who was murdered in 2011, committed the crime.
