YOUNGSTOWN

The YWCA of Youngstown is celebrating women at an International Women’s Day event from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Y facility at 25 W. Rayen Ave.

The event encourages diversity and recognizes the uniqueness of various cultures. Included are a multicultural fashion show, food and music from around the world.

The event is sponsored by the International Institute Fund, a component fund of Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, in partnership with the Women and Gender Studies Department and the Human Ecology Department at Youngstown State University.

Arson-warrant arrest

BOARDMAN

Township police on Monday arrested a woman on an aggravated-arson warrant.

Charged with the felony offense is Wilhelmina Naa-Darkua Djoleto, 46, of Boardman-Canfield Road. She was taken into custody after being discharged from the hospital, then lodged in the Mahoning County jail. She remained jailed Tuesday.

The charge stems from a Feb. 17 structure fire at Southcreek Apartments on Boardman-Canfield Road. The fire reportedly started in “several spots” in Djoleto’s apartment, police said.

Block watch meeting

YOUNGSTOWN

Powerstown Block Watch will have its monthly meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Faith Community Covenant Church, located at Sheridan Road and Midlothian Boulevard.

Health board meetings

CANFIELD

The Mahoning County District Board of Health Personnel Committee will meet at 7:30 a.m. today, followed by the Finance Committee at 10:30 a.m. at Canfield Fairgrounds administration building, 7265 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

Awards for clean audits

Auditor of State Dave Yost announced Springfield, Salem and Niles school districts all received the Auditor of State Award for their clean audit reports. The awards are given to local governments and school districts upon completion of a financial audit.

Entities that receive the award meet these criteria: filing timely financial reports that result in no findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, single audit findings or questioned costs.

8 become US citizens

Eight people became U.S. citizens in a recent naturalization ceremony before Judge Robert N. Rusu Jr. of Mahoning County Probate Court. A new citizen originating from the Philippines, who now lives in Youngstown, and a new citizen originating from Mexico, who now lives in Poland, did not wish to have their names published. The other new citizens, their countries of origin and current hometowns are: Adele Martig, South Africa, Beloit; Bruno Serrano, Peru, Struthers; Joao Carlos Maceira, Portugal, Struthers; Johnny Alberto Caceres, Venezuela, Sebring; Jake Ian Shirley, Australia, Poland; and Mohammad A. Alwahkyan, Jordan, Boardman.

Road closed for tree work

COLUMBIANA

State Route 154, from Pine Hollow Road to Fairfield School Road, will be closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for two weeks beginning Monday for tree-trimming, the Ohio Department of Transportation has announced.

Beginning at the intersection of state Route 11 and state Route 154, traffic will be detoured south on state Route 11 to state Route 7/state Route 267 (Rogers exit), then north on state Route 7, back to state Route 154 and reverse.

ODOT will be using a SkyTrim unit for canopy removal and right of way clearing and maintenance. Work is expected to be completed by March 23.

Pi Day Pie Program

OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology, 11 W. Federal St., is encouraging local restaurants to celebrate Pi Day by placing a Pi Day Pie on the menu for the month of March.

Pi is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and it is also one of the most revered mathematical constants in the known world. Pi Day is celebrated March 14.

Skin-care workshop

The Forest of Youth Holistic Spa is hosting a holistic skin-care workshop at Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center, 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D3, Southbridge West Complex, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Led by Holistic Esthetician Ashley Suzelis, the workshop offers health and wellness through understanding skin care. Information will be provided on the dangers of chemical ingredients being applied to the skin topically, ingredients to avoid and why, and beneficial ingredients to increase the function of the skin.

Coitsville officials to meet

COITSVILLE

Township trustees will have a special meeting today at 5:30 p.m. at the town hall, 3711 McCartney Road. The purpose of the meeting and work study is to discuss fire personnel.
