Warrant arrest turns to four-hour standoff in Springfield Township
Staff report
NEW SPRINGFIELD
An arrest warrant for a suspect charged with burglary turned into a four-hour standoff with township police and several law-enforcement agencies across Mahoning County.
The standoff took place at the East Garfield Road residence of Brandon Hill, 22, who is in the county jail, township Police Chief Matt Mohn said Saturday.
Police learned Hill, a suspect in multiple burglary incidents in Canfield last week, lived in Springfield Township, and they attempted to serve an arrest warrant at the residence Friday.
Hill fled the residence on foot, successfully evading police.
About 9 a.m. Saturday, officers received word from neighbors that Hill had returned home, and they attempted to arrest him again.
When they called the residence, Mohn said Hill refused to leave the house.
They also learned he had a weapon, later identified as a shotgun, causing police to call for backup.
After about four hours of negotiations, Hill surrendered peacefully. He is charged with the burglaries from Monday and also faces possible future charges from the standoff, Mohn said.
Township police are awaiting a search warrant to uncover any more evidence in the home.
Mohn thanked the assistance from the other agencies and the conduct they carried out during the standoff.
“The bottom line is nobody got hurt,” he said.
