Holiday closing at libraries
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Independence Day, on July 4.
“The Princess and the Pea” performance
Join the Poland library on July 17 at 10 a.m. for a special performance of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea,” presented by the Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre. This event is for children of all ages.
Drama camp
Join the Poland library for its third annual drama camp on July 10-14 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Learn about different aspects of theater, including auditions, the casting process, stage directions and more. Students will present “The Three Little Pigs in Fantasyland” for family and friends on the last day of camp, July 14. There will also be refreshments on July 14. Registration is required. Spanish for bigger children
Children in grades 1-4 are invited to learn Spanish language and culture through games and interactive activities taught by James Hungerford at the Poland library on July 3 and 10 at 6 p.m. Space is limited for this program series. To make reservations, call the library at 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library. Preference will be given to participants who can attend all four sessions.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library every Wednesday in July at 10 a.m.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Poland library on July 6 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Edible architecture
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Coliseum, the Empire State Building. Use cookies, frosting and other goodies to re-create the world’s most amazing architecture, or design a delicious building of your own at the Poland library on July 20 at 6 p.m. This event is for children of all ages; children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Arabian nights and tales
Eight high school actors will take on beloved Arabian fairy tale characters to deliver wonderful fairy tales at the Poland library on July 3 at 11 a.m. This event is for children of all ages.
Engineering extravaganza
Test your building and design skills using Dominoes, Q-BA-Mazes, Zoobs and more at the Poland library on July 26 from 10 a.m. until noon. Go to the library to create different structures that can survive challenges. This event is for those in grades K-2.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, on July 26 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.
Escape the library
You’ve been locked into a mysterious room in the Poland library - can you and your friends solve the riddles and puzzles to get out in time? Find out in the Poland library Escape Room on July 18 at 2 p.m. This event is for teens in grades 7-12. Call the library to register.
Beginner applique at your library
Adults and teens ages 12 and older are invited to the Poland library on July 19 at 1:30 p.m. to learn applique from representatives of the Youngstown Embroiderer’s Build. Participants will make a pin cushion; all supplies will be provided. Reserve a spot now for this special program by calling 330-744-8636 or by using the library’s events calendar.
Color your world
Join the Poland library for a relaxing evening of adult coloring on July 12 from 7-8:30 p.m. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own. Colorful, light refreshments will be served.
Gmail and Google tools
Come to this class at the Poland library on July 31 at 11 a.m. to learn about: Google Photos, Advanced Gmail features and Google calendar. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland branch to register. This event is for teens and adults.
Blood drive
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross on July 7 from 10:30 until 3 p.m. and July 27 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. at the Poland library. The blood drive will serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. They are taking blood donations to help the community. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Blood pressure check
There will be a blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association at the Poland library on July 12 from 2-3 p.m.
Author book sale
In partnership with Celebrate Poland, the Friends of PLYMC will host a Local Author Book Signing and Sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. outside the Poland library on July 1. Come out and support the community’s local authors. There will also be a half-price book sale in the Friends Bookstore on June 30 and July 1. Yoga class

Venders needed for Celebrate Poland event
Arts and crafts, non-profit organizations and small businesses needed for the annual Celebrate Poland festival on July 1 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. The cost is $30 for an outdoor space. For more information and to sign up, call 330-757-4584
Summer reading begin
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World!” and runs through July 31. All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 21 will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings
Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Applications are available to be retrieved from the festival website at http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/italian-man-woman-year/ or submit an essay with details regarding your nominee. The following details are recommended: name, birth date and location of birth, spouse’s name, parents names and or grandparents, sisters and brothers names, favorite past times or hobbies, what part of Italy they were from originally and what they have accomplished during the span of their life.
