July is National Ice Cream Month, and here’s the scoop on best places to get the treat in Ohio. We’re going to assume that you know about Youngstown’s famous Handel’s ice cream, and instead concentrate on other places.

v Dietsch Brothers (Findlay): This landmark has been a family affair since Edward Dietsch purchased the C.W. Wickham Candy Co. in the late 1920s. The ice cream bars are a hometown favorite along with the chocolate-covered pretzels and seasonal flavors such as amaretto cherry, peach and walnut.

v Toft’s Dairy (Sandusky): At the ripe old age of 117, Toft’s Dairy is one of the oldest dairies in Ohio. Milk is delivered to Toft’s every day from 20 local dairies, ensuring fresh products.

v Mitchell’s Ice Cream (Cleveland): Made one batch at a time, Mitchell’s ice cream is beloved for its fresh and local ingredients. Working with Cleveland businesses and sustainable growers, Mitchell’s prides itself on creating handcrafted ice cream that sustains the economy.

v Tom’s Ice Cream Bowl (Zanesville): Located in an unassuming cement-block building that has a diner and an ice cream tradition dating back to 1948, Tom’s is where the locals go. This is the kind of place your grandparents might have taken you for a cone while they reminisced about their own childhoods.

v Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams (Columbus): A pioneer in the artisan-foods movement, owner Jeni Britton Bauer’s inventive ice cream contains whole ingredients, dairy from grass-pastured cows and inspired flavor combinations, such as juniper and lemon, chamomile and chardonnay and berries and lavender.

“Killjoys” (8 p.m., Syfy): “Killjoys,” the far-out drama series about bounty hunters in space, is back for a third season because, well, there are bigger villains to fry.

Rob Lowe terrified by bigfoot creature

Rob Lowe says he thought he was going to be killed during an encounter with a bigfoot creature while filming his new A&E docuseries. Lowe said the encounter took place in the Ozark Mountains, which stretch between Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. He and his sons were camping there to investigate a bigfoot-like creature known there as a “wood ape” during a shoot for “The Lowe Files” when something began to approach their camp. Lowe says he was lying on the ground thinking he was going to be killed.

He adds that he’s “fully aware” the story makes him sound like “a crazy, Hollywood kook.”

“The Lowe Files” follows the actor and sons as they explore mysterious phenomena.
