Children at the Poland library worked on their artistic skills during a painting program on May 22.
Artist Jan Luoma led the children who were in kindergarten through fourth-grade in creating a spring kite painting. The children were supplied with a canvas, paintbrushes and different colored paint to create their masterpiece. There was a sample canvas that allowed the children to see what the end product should look like. There were children who followed the sample canvas exactly, while others put their own twist on it.
Prior to hosting painting parties, Luoma was an employee with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Having the opportunity to return to the libraries and host painting parties gives Luoma the chance to interact with the children and her former co-workers.
Parents who attended the paint program with their children liked that it gave them an opportunity to be creative and make new friends in the process. Some children came with friends, siblings or by themselves with an adult.
Luoma hosts several painting programs at the Poland library throughout the year. There are programs for children in kindergarten through fourth-grade, fifth-through twelfth-grade and adults. The painting program is something that is very popular at the library and usually fills up quickly.
