All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Independence Day, on July 4.
Canfield Lions next fish dinners to be July 7
The Canfield Lions next fish dinner will be on July 7. Dinner is served from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Dinners are haddock (baked or fried) or macaroni and cheese or haluski or pierogis. You get your choice of one side from french fries, macaroni and cheese, pierogis or haluski. This includes cole slaw or green beans, roll, drink and dessert. The cost is $11 and take out is available.
Arabian nights and tales
Eight high school actors will take on beloved Arabian fairy tale characters to deliver wonderful fairy tales at the Canfield library on July 6 at 11 a.m. This event is for children of all ages.
Mr. Puppet and his friends
Help Mr. Puppet, also known as Bob Abdou, welcome his friends Loupee, Marty, Tiny and Ollie, from all over the world, on July 11 at 1 p.m. at the Canfield library. Learn fun facts and win prizes. This event is for children of all ages.
The Oakland Center for the Arts presents…
Join professional musicians for musical performances at the Canfield library on July 20 at 7 p.m. The theme will be “A History of Country Music.” This event is for adults.
“The Princess and the Pea” performance
Join the Canfield library on July 25 at 1 p.m. for a special performance of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea,” presented by the Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre. This event is for children of all ages.
The Wave Foundation presents African penguins
Not all penguins live in the deep, deep cold. Go to the Canfield library on July 21 at 12 p.m. and meet a live African Penguin from the Wave Foundation and learn about their specific adaptations, natural history, predators and all things penguin. This event is for children of all ages.
Holocaust survivors
Holocaust Education Specialist Jess McClain will share the experiences of local holocaust survivors Henry Kinast and Bill Vegh on July 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. This event is for teens and adults.
Build and go craft
Make a craft at the Canfield library during regular hours in June through August to take home. This event is for children of all ages.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in July at 10 a.m.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Canfield library on July 11, 18 and 25 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Build a better mousetrap
Join the Canfield library on July 31 at 11 a.m. as they play the classic game of Mousetrap on a larger scale. Move around the “board,” collecting parts to build the trap, piece by crazy piece, but make sure to keep your mouse from falling for the trap in the end. This event is for school-age children and up only.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in July at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
“High five” to the dogs
Get to know some of the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs on July 15 at 11 a.m. These dogs are reading buddies at the monthly “Tales to Tails” program. Meet and greet the friendly, furry faces and give them a “high five” to welcome them to the library. Therapy dogs are from “K9s for Compassion,” a community partner of Pet Partners.

Read aloud to a registered therapy dog at the Canfield library on July 5 at 6 p.m. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice. This event is for children grades K and up. Dogs are provided by K9’s for Compassion, a community partner of Pet Partners.
Engineering extravaganza
Test your building and design skills using Dominoes, Q-BA-Mazes, Zoobs and more at the Canfield library on July 18 from 2-4 p.m. Go to the library to create different structures that can survive challenges. This event is for those in grades K-2.
Lego my library
Meet at the Canfield library on July 8 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. and on July 19 from 6-7 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Lego WeDo Robots
Learn about Lego WeDo Robots at the Canfield library on July 17 from 10 a.m. until noon. Children will work through the stages of building and programming the robots. This event is for grades 1-3. Call 330-744-8636 to register, space is limited.
Coloring for grown-ups
Join the Canfield library on July 17 from 10-11:30 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.
Umbrella art
Don’t get caught in the rain with a drab looking umbrella. Join the Canfield library on July 13 at 6:30 p.m. to create your own unique umbrella design. This event is for adults and teens. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 330-744-8636 to register.

There will be a blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association at the Canfield library on July 19 from 1-2 p.m.
Basic Microsoft Word class
Learn very basic computer skills involving the Microsoft Office Word program at the Canfield library on July 26 at 6:30 p.m. This is a beginner’s class that will cover cut and paste and the Word menus. If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in during Canfield library hours during July to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.

Introduction to Pinterest
If you are curious about Pinterest, join the Canfield library on July 17 at 6:30 p.m. in its beginner’s class on how to set up an account, search for items (like recipes or craft ideas), create boards and save pins. Off the shelves
This monthly book club will discuss titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s Book Club room. Join in with the fun with summer reads at the next meeting on July 25 at 6:30 p.m. The group will discuss “Pretty Girls” by Karin Slaughter. This event is for adults.
Mah-Jongg at the library
The Canfield library is starting a Mah-Jongg club. Drop in on July 10 and 24 and Aug. 14 and 28 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to play Mah-Jongg with others who love the game. Canfield Friends committee to meet
There will be a Friends of PLYMC Canfield Committee meeting on July 12 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library.
Chair yoga class
Friends of PLYMC sponsors a Chair Yoga class every Friday at the Canfield library. The class begins at 10 a.m. Pay as you attend at $10 a session. For more information, call 330-740-6086. This event is for adults.
The Ursuline Center offers women’s series on spiritual journaling
Ursuline Sister of Youngstown Eileen Kernan will host a series of women’s spirituality classes on keeping a journal at the Ursuline Motherhouse, located at 4250 Shields Road, on the Thursdays of July 6, Aug. 3 and Sept. 7 from 6:30-8 p.m. Through the ancient tradition of keeping a journal, Sister Eileen will help participants to dialogue with their inner wisdom, look at where their lives have been, gain wisdom from what is happening in their lives now and look at the movement of their lives for the future. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown.
