Holiday closing at libraries
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Independence Day, on July 4.
Christmas in July event to take place on July 25
Greenbriar Healthcare Center and The Commons Assisted Living are hosting a Christmas in July event on July 25 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. for residents, families and staff to enjoy. The event will feature the following vendors: Plexus, Wine Decor, Hand Knitted Scarves, Jen’s Personalized Creations, Young Living, Trades of Hope and more. The event will take place at Greenbriar Healthcare Center, located at 8064 South Ave. in Boardman.
Boardman Park event to features Army jazz band
On July 8, Boardman Park will have a Family Night in the Park, where The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors will perform at 6:30 p.m. The Jazz Ambassadors—America’s Big Band is the official touring big band of the United States Army. This 19-member ensemble, formed in 1969, has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing America’s original art form, jazz. The band has appeared in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India and throughout Europe. Children’s bouncers, wagon rides and balloons will all begin at 6 p.m. before the concert. Following the concert the entertaining Jock-O the Balloon Man will perform and at dark enjoy the movie, “Miracle.”
Pony rides with Ponytails
Go to the Boardman library from 10 a.m. until noon on July 19 to ride the ponies, hear a story and make a craft. All activities will take place outdoors, weather permitting. A rain date will be announced if needed. All children under 120 pounds may ride the ponies.
“The Princess and the Pea” performance
Join the Boardman library on July 7 at 10 a.m. for a special performance of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea,” presented by the Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre. This event is for children of all ages.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library on July 11, 18 and 25 at 10 a.m.
Build and go craft
Make a craft at the Boardman library during regular hours in June through August to take home. This event is for children of all ages.
Engineering extravaganza
Test your building and design skills using Dominoes, Q-BA-Mazes, Zoobs and more at the Boardman library on July 29 from 10 a.m. until noon. Go to the library to create different structures that can survive challenges. This event is for those in grades K-2.
Family story time
Bring the whole family to the Boardman library on July 5, 12 and 26 at 10 a.m. for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages.
Lego my library
Meet at the Boardman library on July 8 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Check into chess
Join the Boardman library on July 11 at 6 p.m. as they play chess on this evening. This is a family program for all ages. If you would like to learn to play, they will be happy to teach you.
TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting
Check out the Boardman library at the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting taking place this month on July 5 at 6:30 p.m. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
It’s all about yarn
Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project to the Boardman library on July 21 at 11 a.m. and learn from one another. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for adults and teens.
I Read YA book club
This event at the Boardman library on July 17 from 6:30-8 p.m. is for adult fans of young adult literature from ages 18-118. Talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss. The group will be discussing “The Serpent King” by Jeff Zanter at this meeting.
Reader’s Choice book club
Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published at the next meeting of the Reader’s Choice book club on July 10 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. They will discuss the month’s book (“Shanghai Girls” by Lisa See) and preview next month’s book. This event is for adults.
Blood pressure screening
There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library on July 3 from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Puzzle swap
Swap six of your once-done jigsaw puzzles with others at the Boardman library on July 12 at 4 p.m. This is offered every second Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library at 4 p.m. This event is for adults.
Build and go craft
Children of all ages can make a craft to take home during regular hours at the Boardman library from June through August.
Summer reading begin
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World!” and runs through July 31. All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 21 will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Teens and adults can read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) too and earn a chance to win a gift card. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings
Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Applications are available to be retrieved from the festival website at http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/italian-man-woman-year/ or submit an essay with details regarding your nominee.
