Busy weekend for film group

With its efforts beginning to bear fruit, the Youngstown Regional Film Commission is stepping up its efforts to find capable people.

An open casting call for extras and nonspeaking roles, and possible others, will take place Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. at B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave., near downtown. The roles will be for the “Asbury Park” film that will be shot here in late summer by Odyssey Motion Pictures.

Nonunion actors and those in SAG-AFTRA are welcome. Auditionees should bring a head shot, but if you don’t have one, you can get one taken at Saturday’s event.

The casting call will include a seminar on background talent. At 10 p.m., it will segue into a party.

The “Asbury Park” film is set in the not-so-distant past in that faded New Jersey beach town. Fred D’Amico, director of the YRFC, has been busy rounding up muscle cars for the film; he had fertile grounds at last weekend’s Hot Rod Super Nationals at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

The YRFC also will have an informal event Friday evening at Suzie’s Dogs and Drafts on North Phelps Street, downtown, to answer questions for locals who might be interested in working in movies. The film “The Power of Few,” of which D’Amico was a producer, will be screened.

JAZZ IN PARK, MORLEY PAVILION SERIES BEGIN

A couple of annual free outdoor music series have just started, or soon will.

The Jazz in the Park concert series at B&O Station kicks off Sunday with the Nathan James Review. It runs from 3 to 7 p.m.

Upcoming shows in the series include Forecast, July 9; Willie Ross and the Jazz Disciples, July 16; Stacia Abbott and Cross Current, July 23; and Russell Thompson and Free Agent, July 30.

At Morley Pavilion, in Mill Creek Park’s Wick Recreation Area, the music series began last week. It will continue Wednesday with Hoss and the Juggernauts, followed by Going for the One (music of YES), July 12; Broken Reins (modern country), July 19; Redline (dance hits), July 26; The Juke Hounds (blues and rock), Aug. 2; Demos Papadimas and his band (American roots with Mediterranean influences), Aug. 9; and Easy Street Productions (showtunes and more), Aug. 16.

All of the shows at the Morley start at 7 p.m.

REGGAE FEST FEATURING SISTER NANCY, TEFLON

The inaugural Reggae Fest will take place Saturday at Flambeau’s Live, 2308 Market St., Youngstown, featuring Sister Nancy and Teflon, both from Jamaica.

Rounding out the bill are a number of local acts, including Seefari, the Elovaters, Zion Lion Reggae Band, the Beck Ward Project, Seamus, Dexter Jones, the Flow Band, Mazhorell, Youngstown’s Total Package Band and more.

LOCAL TALENT AND VARIETY SHOW AT SOUTH FIELD HOUSE

A talent show will begin at noon Saturday, and last for hours and hours, at the old South High School field house on Market Street in Youngstown. Admission is $5. Acts will include comedy, hip-hop and the Ward Beck Project.

THE VOICE OF THE PENGUINS AT CASINO IN AUSTINTOWN

Jeff Jimerson and Airborne will provide the entertainment Friday night on the small stage behind the bar at Hollywood Gaming’s Mahoning Valley casino in Austintown.

The Pittsburgh-based Jimerson and his band do pop and rock covers. But every Pittsburgh Penguins fan knows that he also sings a rousing National Anthem before each home game.

Admission is free, and Jimerson will take the stage at 8 p.m.
