Vindy Spring Athletes: Marco DeFalco

It’s been quite a high school career and season for Marco DeFalco. The lefthander went from a freshman unsure of himself and his abilities, to throwing three no-hitters his senior year and receiving a scholarship from Youngstown State.

“Looking back at my freshman and sophomore years, I never would’ve expected to get where I am now,” DeFalco said. “My freshman year I struggled a lot. It’s just hard to believe I got to where I’m at now. It just shows what hard work can do for you.”

While technique and physical attributes can always be improved, DeFalco attributes his rapid success in his later high school years to more of a mental attitude.

“Freshman year, I struggled a lot with my confidence,” DeFalco said. “Once I showed myself that I can do it and play at the level I played this year it helped me excel.”

Two of the southpaw’s no-hitters came in big spots. His second clinched the All-American Conference White Tier championship for Niles in a win against Lakeview while the third was in his next start, blanking Southeast in a sectional final.

His first no-hitter was against Jefferson.

“There’s so much emotion [in a no-hitter],” DeFalco said.

YSU head coach Dan Bertolini was able to win over the Niles graduate who won’t have to go far to continue playing in college at Eastwood Field.

“I’m excited to be a part of that program,” DeFalco said.
