3 killed in wreck while headed to Cedar Point

HELENA

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says three people have died when their car collided with a tractor-trailer in Sandusky County as they headed toward Cedar Point amusement park.

The patrol says the accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Friday on U.S. Route 6. Those killed were the driver, 21-year-old Matthew Bramel, and two passengers, 19-year-old Shelby Johnson and 25-year-old Cody Nelson. All were from Louisville, Ky. A third passenger, 21-year-old Alexis Martin, of New Albany, Ind., was taken to a hospital with injuries.

The patrol says Bramel drove into the tractor-trailer while trying to pass vehicles on a county road in Madison Township. The 39-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer wasn’t injured.

The patrol says speed is believed to be the main cause of the accident.

New plea hearing set for man accused of links to IS

COLUMBUS

A federal judge has rescheduled a plea hearing for an Ohio man accused of trying to travel to Libya to join the Islamic State group.

Documents filed in federal court say Aaron Daniels, of Columbus, will plead guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Authorities allege Daniels wired $250 to an Islamic State operative in January 2016 and told an undercover informant he was interested in traveling to commit violence overseas.

Daniels was taken into custody last year at John Glenn Columbus International Airport after a monthlong investigation.

Sanders joining Midwest bus tour against health bill

COLUMBUS

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is traveling to Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia this weekend to urge fellow senators to oppose Senate health care legislation and retain the Affordable Care Act.

The former Democratic presidential candidate is joining a MoveOn.org bus tour in the three states, where he’ll urge hometown Republican Sens. Pat Toomey, Rob Portman and Shelley Moore Capito to oppose the Senate bill.

The measure carries forward many of the goals of House-passed legislation aimed at upending the federal health care overhaul commonly known as Obamacare.

Sanders is scheduled to hold rallies today in Columbus and Charleston, W.Va.

UK Parliament probes cyberattack

LONDON

British officials were investigating a cyberattack Saturday on the country’s Parliament after discovering “unauthorized attempts to access parliamentary user accounts.”

A statement from the House of Commons said that as a precaution, remote email access for members has been disabled in order to protect the network from hackers.

“As a result, some Members of Parliament [lawmakers] and staff cannot access their email accounts outside of Westminster,” it said, adding that IT services at Parliament itself were working normally.

It was not immediately clear how many people were affected or what the extent of the damage was.

An email sent to all those affected described a “sustained and determined attack on all parliamentary user accounts in an attempt to identify weak passwords,” according to The Guardian newspaper.
