Sharon Speedway races washed out

HARTFORD

Because of Friday’s rains, Sharon Speedway has canceled tonight’s races.

The RUSH Sportsman Modified Tour and “Manufacturers Night” has been rescheduled for July 1 while the 2016 “Apple Festival Nationals” make-up feature for the Sportsman Mods has been moved to Aug. 5.

The July 1 “Steel Valley Thunder” program also will include the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply Big-Block Modifieds, Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods and the Junior Sprints for kids.

Cavs donate $875K to local Habitat

CLEVELAND

The Cleveland Cavaliers have donated $875,000 in proceeds from NBA Finals watch parties to Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity.

Watch parties were hosted at the Quicken Loans Arena during the NBA Finals this year when the Cavaliers played the Golden State Warriors at Oakland. Fans could buy tickets online for $10.

The watch party program launched during the 2015 NBA Finals, generating more than $260,000.

Cavaliers CEO Len Komoroski says it’s “highly appropriate” that playoff support can be translated into a positive outcome for Cleveland neighborhoods.

The team has donated more than $2 million to nonprofits in the city through team fundraisers, in-game raffles and watch parties during the past three years.

The Warriors won the championship, beating the Cavaliers in four of five games during the Finals.

Blue Jackets send Saad back to Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have re-acquired forward Brandon Saad (Mahoning Valley Phantoms, 2008-09) in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets, parting with top young forward Artemi Panarin to complete the blockbuster deal.

The 24-year-old Saad spent his first four seasons with Chicago, helping the Blackhawks win two Stanley Cups. Concerned about their ability to re-sign Saad when he became a restricted free agent in 2015, the Blackhawks traded the rugged winger to the Blue Jackets.

He had 24 goals and 29 assists in 82 games for Columbus last season.

The Blackhawks also received goaltender Anton Forsberg and a 2018 fifth-round draft pick in Friday’s trade in exchange for forwards Panarin and Tyler Motte and Chicago’s sixth-round selection on Saturday.

The loss of Panarin is a big blow for Chicago. He teamed with Patrick Kane and Artem Anisimov to form one of the NHL’s most potent lines the past couple seasons.

LSU ends Oregon State win streak of 23 games

Alex Lange limited top-seeded Oregon State to two hits over 71/3 innings, and LSU ended the Beavers’ 23-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory Friday to set up a winner-take-all Bracket 1 final at the College World Series.

The teams will meet again Saturday, with the winner going to the best-of-three finals beginning Monday.

The Tigers (51-18), who avenged a 13-1 loss to the Beavers (56-5) on Monday, became the first team to knock off the Beavers since Southern California on April 29.

They scored all three of their runs against national wins leader Jake Thompson (14-1). Lange (10-5) retired eight in a row before he turned the game over to closer Zack Hess with one out in the eighth. Hess retired the last five batters, four by strikeout, for his fourth save.

LSU led 2-0 on Beau Jordan’s safety-squeeze bunt scored Zach Watson in the second, and Josh Smith homered leading off the seventh.
