Man run off the road

GIRARD

A man was run off the road while traveling on state Route 11 early Friday by a Cortland man charged with drunken driving.

No one was injured, but Gary Driscoll, 64, was charged after driving impaired south in the northbound lane for about 15 miles, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The driver who was forced off the road contacted The Vindicator.

Driscoll was first observed driving the wrong way in Johnston Township. Troopers were unable to get him to stop, so they set up stop sticks on the highway in Liberty Township near Tibbetts-Wick Road and arrested him without incident.

Stop sticks deflate a tire slowly to give a driver time to stop without causing an accident, according to the www.stopstick.com website.

Child-sex sentence

YOUNGSTOWN

The former principal of a Poland Township church school is going to prison for having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Judge Anthony D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Friday sentenced Christopher Stivers to seven years in prison, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

The sentence is longer than the six years recommended by prosecutors when the 32-year-old Struthers man pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual battery last month.

The indictment said the sexual contact took place between early October and late November, just days after the girl turned 14.

According to police, the activity took place at the Gospel Baptist School on Clingan Road, where Stivers served as principal.

After serving his prison time, Stivers will be required to register as a tier-three sex offender.
