The Ursuline Center offers women’s series on spiritual journaling
Ursuline Sister of Youngstown Eileen Kernan will host a series of women’s spirituality classes on keeping a journal at the Ursuline Motherhouse, located at 4250 Shields Road, on the Thursdays of July 6, Aug. 3 and Sept. 7 from 6:30-8 p.m. Through the ancient tradition of keeping a journal, Sister Eileen will help participants to dialogue with their inner wisdom, look at where their lives have been, gain wisdom from what is happening in their lives now and look at the movement of their lives for the future. Participants should bring supplies to journal with. Call 330-799-4941 for reservations. The sessions are free, but goodwill offerings will be accepted. The Ursuline Center is the education, health and wellness facility operated by the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.
Trustees approve interim library director; committee hires search firm
At a regular meeting on June 8, in the Canfield library meeting room, Trustees of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) approved Susan Merriman to serve as interim director during the period that it takes to install a new director after the departure of Heidi M. Daniel, Library Executive Director, on July 21. Daniel is leaving to take the position of CEO at the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore, Md. She has been at PLYMC since July of 2012. Merriman, currently retired, had served for 23 years as the Library’s fiscal officer. Salary has not yet been determined for the interim director. The Trustee Search Committee, which met prior to the full board meeting, approved hiring the firm of Bradbury Miller Associates for the search for a new Library Executive Director at a fee of $20,000.

If you would you like to learn about all that OverDrive can do for you, this event on June 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Join the library in this beginners class where you will learn how to set up an OverDrive account, download materials and get an overview of the OverDrive features. Blood drive at the library
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Canfield library on June 29 from 1-6 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Coupon swap at the library
If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in during the Canfield library hours in June through August to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.
Mah Jongg at the library
The Canfield library is starting a Mah Jongg Club. Drop in on June 28 from 1-3 p.m. to play Mah Jongg with others who love the game. Only a limited number of sets will be provided. Space may be limited. Register so they know how many tables to set up. Call 330-744-8636. This event is for adults

Canfield Community Concert Band hosts June 27 event
The Canfield Community Concert Band is hosting a new event, the John Philip Sousa Piccolo Palooza, on June 27 at the Austintown Township Park. The band is inviting area piccolo players to join in an epic performance of Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The band has applied to set a world record for number of piccolos playing the piece. The event is also part of the Austintown Fireworks Committee Fourth of July celebration. Players of any age are invited to sign up at the band’s website, www.canfieldccband.org. Pop Art Collage Workshop with Michael Albert
Join New York pop artist Michael Albert at the Canfield library on June 26 at 6 p.m. for a collage workshop where you will create and take home your very own work of art and receive a signed sample from the artist. Parli L’Italiano?
Little ones, ages 3-5, are invited to learn Italian language and culture through games and interactive activities taught by Leah Muntean at the Canfield library on June 26 at 10 a.m. Space is limited for this program series. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in June at 10 a.m.
Tales and Talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Canfield library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader on Austintown library every Tuesday in June at 10 a.m.
Build and go craft
Children of all ages can make a craft to take home during regular hours at the Canfield library from June through August.
Gotta move story time
This event is for children, ages 2-5, who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in June at 10 and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Green Team presents “One Child, One Planet”
Join Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team at the Canfield library on June 27 at 2 p.m. as they present “One Child, One Planet” by Bridget McGovern Llewellyn and Carl R. Sams II during the Summer Reading program. Each page of this book offers suggestions for young and old alike on ways we can appreciate and take care of our precious planet. After reading the story, program participants will create a craft with recovered material and will receive an activity book and information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades Pre-K through 5.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Applications for Italian festival scholarship available
This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University and be of Italian descent in order to be eligible. The deadline for applicants is June 15, 2017.
Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown.
