Trustees approve interim library director; committee hires search firm

At a regular meeting on June 8, in the Canfield library meeting room, Trustees of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) approved Susan Merriman to serve as interim director during the period that it takes to install a new director after the departure of Heidi M. Daniel, Library Executive Director, on July 21. Daniel is leaving to take the position of CEO at the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore, Md. She has been at PLYMC since July of 2012. Merriman, currently retired, had served for 23 years as the Library’s fiscal officer. Salary has not yet been determined for the interim director. The Trustee Search Committee, which met prior to the full board meeting, approved hiring the firm of Bradbury Miller Associates for the search for a new Library Executive Director at a fee of $20,000.

It’s all about yarn

Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another on June 30 at 11 a.m. at the Boardman library. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for adults and teens.

Blood drive at the library

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Boardman library on June 26 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Gardening with native plants

Master Gardener Peg Zeleznik will talk about native plants versus invasive plants, how native plants are good for the environment and how to add them to your garden or landscape on June 24 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. Refreshments will be served. Registration is required.

Pop Art Collage Workshop with Michael Albert

Join New York pop artist Michael Albert at the Boardman library on June 29 at 10 a.m. for a collage workshop where you will create and take home your very own work of art and receive a signed sample from the artist. This event is for school-age children, teens and adults only. Registration is limited for this two-hour program. Call the library or sign up on the events calendar.

Bonding with Babies and Books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in June at 10 a.m.

Build and go craft

Children of all ages can make a craft to take home during regular hours at the Boardman library from June through August.

Family story time

Bring the whole family to the Boardman library on June 28 at 10 a.m. for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages.

Arabian nights and tales

Eight high school actors will take on beloved Arabian fairy tale characters to deliver wonderful fairy tales at the Boardman library on June 30 at 11 a.m. This event is for children of all ages.

Summer reading begin

Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World!” and runs through July 31. All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 21 will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Teens and adults can read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) too and earn a chance to win a gift card. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Thursdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place in Faith Chapel Fellowship Church, located at 511 E. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Applications for Italian festival scholarship available

This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University and be of Italian descent in order to be eligible. The deadline for applicants is June 15, 2017.

Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Applications are available to be retrieved from the festival website at http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/italian-man-woman-year/ or submit an essay with details regarding your nominee.
