Police agencies bust Trumbull marijuana-growing operation

NORTH BLOOMFIELD

Several law-enforcement agencies, working on a tip from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Warren Post, shut down a major marijuana-growing operation Tuesday morning in Bloomfield Township in northern Trumbull County in the 2100 block of state Route 87.

The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV, reported that Tony Villanueva, commander of the Trumbull-Ashtabula Group drug task force, said OHSP officers were addressing concerns about signs at a home preventing cutting along the berm when they smelled suspected marijuana.

After obtaining a search warrant, officers found marijuana plants in two structures as well as in jars and dried. Charges are pending further investigation.

Liberty officials meet cop candidates

Liberty Township trustees will meet and interview potential police officer candidates at 11 a.m. today. This is due to the vacancies on the force. Meetings and interviews will take place at the township administration building, 1315 Church Hill- Hubbard Road.

Meeting today on Poland PUD project

The Poland Zoning Commission will have a public meeting at 6 p.m. today. The meeting will take place at the township government center, 3339 Dobbins Road. The purpose of the meeting is to review the final development plan for a proposed Planned Unit Development, located on Clingan Road, near the swim club.

Roundtable set Thursday on refugees

Sister Ellis McCulloh, Humility of Mary, a case manager for seven years with three agencies, will discuss her role in the refugee-resettlement process in a roundtable session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Dorothy Day House, 620 Belmont Ave.

Forum set at Stambaugh Academy

Cafaro, Seals appointed to YSU board

Kasich announced these appointments to the Youngstown State University Board of Trustees on Tuesday: Molly Seals of Canfield for a term that began Tuesday and that ends April 30, 2024, and Capri Cafaro of Liberty, a former state legislator, for a term that began Tuesday and that ends June 30, 2026.

Teddy Foltz memorial run Sunday

The Teddy Foltz 4th Annual Memorial Poker Run is set for Sunday at Papa’s Sports Bar, 1639 Poland Ave. Breakfast is available starting at 7 a.m. for $5 and registration for bikers and companions starts at 10 a.m.

It is $15 per bike to participate and $5 for passengers. Nonriding food tickets are also available for $10. Vendors will be present, and there will be entertainment, a ticket auction, and a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds raised will go to support Sojourner House Domestic Violence Shelter in Teddy’s name.

All bikes will depart Papa’s at 1 p.m. and return by 5 p.m. Sojourner House is Mahoning County’s domestic-violence shelter that offers emergency shelter, advocacy, counseling, and other supportive services to more than 100 families each year that are escaping violence in the home.

Teddy Foltz, 14, was beaten to death at a Struthers home in 2013.

Grazing Council sets meeting

Korean War vets plan Roses event

The Korean War Veterans Association of Mahoning Valley, Chapter 137, is conducting a Laying of the Roses ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Wickliffe Circle Korean War Memorial, 4125 Mahoning Ave.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial honors those who sacrificed during the three-year conflict. The names on the memorial will be ready.

The main speaker is state Sen. Joseph L. Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd. He is the former senate minority leader and is a Democratic candidate for governor in 2018.

New Castle YMCA offers swim classes

The New Castle Community YMCA is offering free swim instruction and water-safety classes to children who live in local housing developments. The program is designed to engage and educate parents about the importance of water-safety skills and provide local youth with access to swim lessons.

The YMCA will be providing transportation to and from the program, and swimsuits for those who need them.
