Staff report
Morgantown, w.va.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and West Virginia Black Bears once again locked horns in a pitching duel on Tuesday night. One night after being shut out by Black Bear pitching, the Scrappers would get two runs in the second and would lean on the pitching staff to make it hold up. Four Scrappers pitchers would combine to hold West Virginia to just three hits as the Scrappers picked up the 3-1 win.
With two outs in the top of the second inning, the Scrappers would get their first runs of the season on the board. Jonathan Laureano doubled to center to score Gianpaul Gonzalez for a 1-0 lead.
Elvis Perez then followed with a second straight two out double to drive in Laureano to push the lead out to 2-0.
West Virginia would cut the Scrappers lead in half in the bottom of the inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Yoel Gonzalez drove home Sandy Santos on an RBI fielder’s choice to pull the Black Bears to within a run at 2-1. It was as close as West Virginia would get.
